Summary
World of Warcraft Classicis officially banning GDKP runs in Season of Discovery. Once Phase 2 of Season of Discovery begins on February 8, participating in dungeons and raids using this loot system in Season of Discovery could get players banned fromWorld of Warcraft.
Gold Dragon Kill Points, or GDKP, is a system of loot distribution used inWorld of Warcraftraids. It is a transactional system that lets players bid gold to earn loot drops, with the winning bidder earning the item, and the gold from the winning bid being distributed among the other raid party members.

However,World of Warcraft Classichas decided to ban this loot system completely in Season of Discovery. According to arecentWorld of Warcraftforum postfrom community manager Kaivax, participating in GDKP – defined by Blizzard as any loot system in which gold is exchanged for dungeon or raid drops – in any way on Season of Discovery servers will be an actionable offense that can result in suspension or permanent bans with the start of Phase 2. This new policy only affects Season of Discovery right now, but that could change in the future.
What is GDKP in WoW Classic Season of Discovery?
GDKP does have merits, as it allows players to secure gear without dedicating time and resources to a guild, and it encourages a transactional, social environment. However,World of Warcraftfound the negatives outweigh the positives, as GDKP creates a demand for in-game gold that incentivizes participating in illicit RMT, botting, andother bannableWorld of Warcraftactivities.
Fans are understandably split by this decision. While those who dislike the arms race created by GDKP are happy to see the system banned, some think players will find ways to bypass the new restriction and do it anyway. Others are afraid they might get flagged for GDKP simply for trading gold with other characters. Either way, this experimental change is coming to the experimental servers soon, so fans should be mindful once the policy goes into effect alongsideWoW ClassicSeason of Discovery Phase 2on February 8.
