Summary

Blue Beetleis yet another DC superhero movie vying for that number-one spot at the box office. It is the second big-budget DC film this year, followingThe Flash. In a society where superhero movies are starting to become old-hat, it may be hard to rustle up the energy to care for an unknown superhero such as this.

Blue Beetle in Blue Beetle

Ultimately the question is, doesBlue Beetledo enough new to warrant a trip to the movie theater? As a visual spectacle and a fun popcorn movie, the easy answer is yes. There are certainly things the movie leaves on the table for a possible sequel, so let’s dig into those mysteries next.

Warning: This list contains spoilers!

8Where Are The Other Beetles?

The opening title sequence of the movie shows the titular Blue Beetle soaring through space before it crash lands on Earth. The Blue Beetle is not the only object shown in this title sequence though. There is a rainbow of different colored beetles soaring through space too.

Where did they end up, and where did they come from? It seems like the perfect setup for a sequel, although it’s unknown how this movie will tie intothe James GunnDC initiative. Since it does not connect directly to any major franchise, such asBatmanorSuperman, there is a possibility that the Blue Beetle hero can return.

Uncle Rudy in Blue Beetle

7Uncle Rudy’s Tech Background

Uncle Rudy, played by George Lopez, is the breakout star of the film. His outfit and style are wild, from his mullet to his long knee-high socks. Besides being the funny man, Uncle Rudy is gifted with tech savviness. It’s never explained why he’s so gifted other than the fact that the Reyes family used to own a repair garage. It’s also never explained why Uncle Rudy is so afraid of the government. Did he use to secretly work on technology for the government?

6Nana Reyes’ Revolution Background

Uncle Rudy is not the only mysterious member of the Reyes family. Nana Reyes was almost too put together after her son, Alberto, died. She told her family there was a time for grieving, but it wasn’t then. She was focused on saving her grandson, Jaime, by any means necessary, even if that meant wielding a giant battling gun.

She used to be a revolutionary, and that’s all of the informationBlue Beetleshared. It would be odd, but DC could greenlight a spinoff show about how Nana Reyes used to fight for a group of rebels. If Disney+ can make a rebel-basedshow viaAndor, then surely DC can make a successful show about sweet old Nana Reyes.

5Palmera City’s Relation To The DC Universe

Palmera City looks like a high-tech place of the future. This is all thanks to Kord Industries, who presumably helped build this city up. It, unfortunately, doesn’t get a lot of time to shine in the movie. It would be interesting to know how Palmera City ranks next to other DC places, or at least in the movie universe. Every city before this, such as Batman’s Gotham City orThe Flash’s Central City, look like ordinary places in our reality.

4Where Is Jenny’s Dad

Even though this is an origins story for the Blue Beetle character, the film establishes that Jaime isn’t the first iteration. Jenny’s father, Ted Kord, was the Blue Beetle as well. However, the relic did not choose to bond with Ted, but he was determined to become a hero. He instead became ahero like Batmanand invested money into suits and gadgets. Where he went is a big mystery throughout the film, but the mid-credits scene does tease a return.

3The Kord Estate

There are a lot of questions regarding Jenny’s old family home. Why was the Kord Estate, Ted’s house, abandoned? Jenny could have lived there to keep the family secret safe. Not wanting to stay in a giant house alone is understandable, though, to a degree.

Oddly, the Ted Watch was hidden away at Kord Industries instead of being on her person at all times. Did Victoria ever find Ted’s lab, or has it remained a secret all of this time inBlue Beetle? Also, if the estate was abandoned, then how was the power still on?

2Dr. Sanchez’s Sacrifice

Dr. Sanchez seems against the idea of harvesting the Blue Beetle in the movie. Eventually, he stands up to Victoria, who said his name wrong one too many times. He helps Jaime escape, and he also locked himself in the lab with Victoria and the newly reformed Lt. Carapax. It’s meant to bea noble sacrifice, but his death means nothing. Lt. Carapax is easily able to break out, and since Jaime stayed so close, it didn’t even buy him time. The whole situation was very odd.

1Lt. Carapax’s Change Of Heart

Lt. Carapax sort of has a noble sacrifice as well. After Jaime spares him again and says he knows his story, Lt. Carapax somehow has a change of heart. Why would Jaime’s knowledge about his past change things? It’s implied that Victoria brainwashed him to forget exactly the circumstances of how he got transformedinto a cyborg. That’s the only logical reason why he would let Jaime go to then kill Victoria, but it’s still an odd resolution to the conflict inBlue Beetle.
