The Outer Worldsincludes 29 side quests for players to complete while uncovering the many secrets the game has to offer. Gamers that have made their way through the entire main storyline have plenty ofadditional content to explore. Withthe Murder on Eridanos releasing soon, players should attempt to complete as much of the game as possible beforeshifting their focus to the expansion.

The Frightened Engineer side quest is rewarding, but challenging without guidance. This article will help players initiate the quest and find all three volumes of the Young Spacer’s Guide to Mechanical Engineering.
Thomas Kemp
Players will need to travel to the Botanical Lab near Edgewater, where they will find an NPC named Thomas Kemp. Thomas will inform gamers that he wants to find the three volumes of the Young Spacer’s Guide to Mechanical Engineering. As an aspiring engineer, he wants to learn basic engineering concepts. The questline is simple in theory, but the three volumes can be tricky to find. After initiating the quest, players can fast-travel to each of the three volume locations outlined in this article. Gamers that are having trouble acquiring the quest from Thomas should take Parvati with them. It appears that he will only speak of the volumes when she is present. Players that redirected power to the city early in the campaign may have some issues accessing the quest as well.
Volume 01: Community Center
The first volume is located at the Community Center, which is to the southeast of the Botanical Gardens. Most gamers should have this location marked on the map. It will probably be easier to defeat the marauders that are guarding the center rather than trying to run past them. Once inside, players should proceed through the doorway to the right and travel up the stairway to the left. At the top of the stairs, gamers will spot volume 01 on top of the first desk while walking straight ahead. There are several other items that can be looted in the center, and players should have a look around before moving on.
Volume 02: Cannery in Edgewater
Gamers will find the second volume at the Cannery in Edgewater. Once in the cannery, players should walk through the archway to the left. Next, gamers should walk up the ramp and make a left to continue down the walkway. After following the walkway to a dead end, there will be a door on the right. Players will find volume 02 inside of the room on top of the white cabinets.
Volume 03: Geothermal Power Plant
The Geothermal Power Plant is just to the south of the Botanical Gardens. Players that redirected power early in the main quest storyline will need a code to enter the plant, as it will be on lockdown. The password can be obtained from Reed in Edgewater if the door to the plant is locked. Likewise, gamers will need to gain access to the plant through the main storyline before beginning the quest.
Navigating The Plant
Once inside the plant, players should travel down the stairs then take a right on the walkway. At the bottom of the stairs, gamers need to pass through the doorway to the right, then head straight through the next room and up the set of stairs. Players will then proceed straight until they reach an open door on the right. At the end of the room, there will be another set of stairs that lead back down to the main level. At the bottom of the stairs, gamers will see another open doorway to the left.

Players need to pass through the door which will lead them into a circular room. Just past the 01 on the wall, there is another set of stairs. Players need to proceed down the left side of the stairwell and into level 02 of the circular room. Once in the room, there will be a ladder that leads down on the right side of the room. Gamers will take the ladder down, and climb down the latter on floor 03 which will be to the left. Once on the bottom level, players will find the final Volume to the left of the NPC on the far side of the room. Acquiring the final volume will give players 2,000 experience points. Gamers will also find energizing ointment and an ammo box right next to the book.
Return To Thomas
After collecting all three volumes, players can return to Thomas to claim their reward. Thomas will give players the Electro-Charged Surface. This item hasincredibly effective perksthat modify both armor and workbenches. The modification will stun and damage enemies that usepowerful melee attacks. Electro-Charged Surface also has a chance to damage any enemy that comes in contact with a player’s armor. In addition, players will receive Deserters Reputation, 8,750 experience points, as well as 300, 500, and 800 Bit Cartridge. For a relatively easy quest, the rewards are certainly worth the effort.
