Ellie inThe Last of Usis one of the most prominent gay characters in all of gaming. As such, it stands to reason that fans would hope that this would remain part of her character in the upcoming HBO adaptation ofThe Last of Us, and as it turns out, that will indeed be the case. It has been confirmed by executive producer and writer Craig Mazin that Ellie will retain her sexuality inThe Last of UsTV series.
Craig Mazinconfirmed as much when interacting with a fan on Twitter. The fan responded to HBO’s announcement ofThe Last of UsTV series saying that they shouldn’t erase the franchise’s gay representation. Mazin responded with, “You have my word.” Later in the Twitter thread, someone else said, “Bag it and tag it this tweet is now evidence,” to which Mazin responded, “Correct. It is a receipt.”

Ellie’s sexuality wasn’t really a focus in the originalLast of Us, but it became apparent in the game’sLeft BehindDLC. In that DLC, players learn that Ellie is gay, and that aspect of her personality is set to be explored much more in the upcomingLast of Us 2.
InThe Last of Us 2, Ellie’s girlfriend Dina will play a major role.Dina is portrayed by actress Shannon Woodwardin the video game, but it’s unclear if she would be considered for the role inThe Last of UsHBO adaptation or not.
The Last of UsHBO show is set to adapt the first game in the series, though, so it’s unlikely that characters like Dina will appear at all. It’s possible that the show will explore the events ofLeft Behind, which first revealed Ellie’s sexuality, through flashbacks, or maybe the story will be conveyed in some other way. It’s also possible thatThe Last of UsTV showwill ignoreLeft Behindand do something completely different to reveal Ellie’s sexuality to the audience.
As it stands,The Last of UsTV series is in the earliest stages of production, so details like this likely have yet to be ironed out. Fans will first have a chance to play throughThe Last of Us 2, which is set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 4 on May 29.
The Last of Usis in development at HBO.
