Hot off the heels of the ultra-popularWandaVision,The Falcon and the Winter Soldierwill premiere on the Disney+ streaming service on Friday, March 19. Disney has been heavily promoting the show by releasing trailers and other promotional material, with this marketing barrage also including acrossover with Microsoft to promote the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. The secondFalcon and the Winter SoldierGame Pass ad features a surprising revelation for Marvel Cinematic Universe fanatics.
In theAvengers: Endgamemovie, Thor has become depressed and overweight. Instead of fighting supervillains, Thor spends his days playing video games likeFortnite, where he is tormented by a user named Noobmaster69. This throwaway gag was referenced in the latestFalcon and the Winter SoldierGame Pass ad, where Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson (aka The Falcon) is talking to a game store employee about Game Pass, as he is trying to get back into gaming after returning from the “blip.”

Even some of the most hardcore MCU fans may not realize this, but the game store employee character has actually appeared in theMCUin the past. Portrayed by DC Pierson, the character used to work as tech support for Apple, as seen inCaptain America: The Winter Soldier. While one could hardly say this Xbox Game Pass commercial is completely canon, it seems safe to say that Noobmaster69 is indeed the same DC Pierson character.
WithThe Falcon and the Winter Soldierpremiering this Friday, March 19, it remains to be seen if there will be another one of these ads or not that continues the story. This ad does seem definitive, as it has Falcon actually playing Game Pass games interspersed with various clips from the TV series, and it’s hard to see how it could follow up the Noobmaster69 revelation.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldieris the second step for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with it set to be followed byBlack Widowin May andLokiin June. Barring anymore COVID-19 related delays, they will be followed up byShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,Eternals, andSpider-Man: No Way Home.
