Players may have had to wait for a long time – and there were definitely a few years when the future of the series seemed fairly dark – but a newFableis finally on the way. The franchise has switched hands from the sadly no longer functioning Lionhead Studios to developer Playground Games, mostly known for theForzaracing series. But among all this turmoil and change, fans can rest assured that they will be able to get their hands on a newFablegame in the not-too-distant future.
There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the upcomingFableand not many details have been released since it was first announced. The rumor mill has been running at full speed, with talk ranging from multiple planets to explore to a destructive meteorite that destroyed civilization only for it to build itself back up to a medieval level of technological advancement. Some of the speculation is a little extreme, butPlayground Games has remained pretty tight-lipped aboutFable. Many fans of the franchise are hoping older elements make a reappearance, like certain spells of even characters. A popular face from the previous games was the all-knowing Theresa, who many players hope will make a comeback.

Connecting The Games
From the very first (and very few) glimpses that players have had of the upcomingFable, it’s clear that the developer is wanting to return to the more fantastical and fairytale-like aspects of the earlier games. The firstFableembraced its folkloric and magical inspirations, with mythical creatures, spells, and grand tales of intrepid heroes and dastardly villains. As the games progressed, they started to move the timeline forward and introduce new technologies such as guns, and while magic and fairytale elements were still present,by the timeFable 3came outthe franchise had a very different focus.
SomeFablefans felt like the series lost its way a little bit toward the end of its run at Lionhead Studios, and would welcome a return back to the more medieval fantasy inspirations of the earlier games. Rebooting the series with a fresh focus, a new setting, and its own unique story is a good idea and from what Playground Games has revealed so far, it seems like the developer agrees. However, there are still lots of elements that fans hope that the new game keeps, like theFablefranchise’s specific brand of silly humor. While this is the chance to reboot the series, it shouldn’t forget its earlier iterations, and including one of two things from the first games willhelp connect the newestFableto its predecessors and give something back to the fans as well.

Theresa’s Return
Theresa would be the perfect way to establish a tangible linkbetween the upcomingFableand the previous entries in the series. She was a stalwart addition to everyFablegame and helped to tie the entries together narratively as well as serving as a familiar touchstone throughout each story. She started off as the sister of the Hero of Oakvale in the firstFableand then transitioned into a blind seer with prophetic visions, offering guidance and help to each successive protagonist in the franchise.
Theresa already had a preternaturally long life, surviving for hundreds of years to appear in eachFableentry and to help shape the story and the actions of the characters. As such, she could conceivably exist in the upcoming game even if there is a substantial time difference. Many players are hoping that thenewestFableincludes much of the established lore, as there is already a deep well of storytelling to draw from within the franchise, and it would be a shame to do away with it altogether. Theresa could be an excellent figure to include, given her prominence in the series so far, and there are still a lot of interesting ways the character could be developed and utilized.
