Now that the idea ofvideo game moviesisn’t immediately scoffed at anymore, many are tinkering with which will be the next franchises to receive movie adaptations in the future. To the surprise of some, it turns out that the most wanted video game movie right now is theSuper Mario Bros.franchise.

In a new poll from Hollywood Reporter/Morning Consult, many gamers and moviegoers voiced their opinions on which should be the next game franchises to receive film adaptations. Among the franchises selected, theMariofranchise was voted as the most wanted video game movie adaptation.

The poll was conducted among 2,200 adults in the U.S., of which 44% were either “very” or “somewhat” interested in aSuper Mario Bros.movie adaptation. Falling just behind theMariofranchise were thePac-ManandMario Kartfranchises, both tying at 37% of adults saying they were “very” or “somewhat” interested in a movie adaptation of either.

The interest in thesevideo game movie adaptationswas equally distributed among men and women. Further, African-Americans had widely expressed more interest in the development of aSuper Mario Bros. film,Mario Kartfilm, andPac-Manfilm. Tyler Sinclair, VP of Morning Consult, said that this shows the yearning of consumers for game movie adaptations. Further, this will send a signal to studios that may have been previously hesitant to develop video game films.

The poll included other video game franchises that generated some interest in film adaptations. Just behindPac-ManandMario Kartwas theDonkey Kongfranchise at 36% of responders saying they were “very” or “somewhat” interested. After,Donkey KongcameGrand Theft Auto,Call of Duty,Legend of Zelda,Super Smash Bros.,Tetris,Halo, and more. On the poll, the series that generated the least amount of interest in a video game adaptation wasStarcraft.

It’s likely to come as little surprise that people want more video game film adaptations. However, it does appear that1993’s live-actionSuper Mario Bros.filmhas either been forgiven or forgotten by many. As well, there are young generations ofMariofans who may not be aware of the panned movie and want to see Mario on the silver screen.
