World of Warcraftis arguably one of the most addictive video games to come out of the medium. While in more recent years gaming addiction has been treated seriously, especially by theUK Parliament, back in the early days ofWorld of Warcraft one had to play the game as much as possible to get ahead. With new expansions releasing every couple of years to give players new raids, new classes, races, and another level cap to hit, it can become an all-consuming game. Especially with the massively-multiplayer element ofWorld of Warcraftoften requiring players to be constantly online, the game can take over a person’s life. For oneStranger Thingsstar, this was certainly the case as he reminisces on his time withWorld of Warcraftin a recent interview.
David Harbour, known for playing police chiefHopper onStranger Things, was being interviewed alongside his co-star Winona Ryder after the first volume of season 4 had aired. About 17 minutes into the conversation, host Felicia Day brings up the fact that her and Harbour were speaking aboutWorld of Warcraftbefore the actor winces slightly and smiles, referring toWorld of Warcraftas “the most embarrassing thing in my existence.”

AfterWinona Ryderasks whatWorld of Warcraftis, Harbour launches into a story about how in 2005, he was “wildly addicted” toWorld of Warcraft, and that it “ruined his life” for that year. Despite showing clear embarrassment and regret about his time inWorld of Warcraft, Harbour did seem to remember some specific details about his time in the game, such as the fact that he had a Night Elf Warrior named “Norad.”
Harbour tried to explain that Norad was the second tank of his whole guild, essentially implying that his role was vital to the success of the group in raids. While Felicia Day, an avidWorld of Warcraftplayer herself, understood each detail Harbour mentioned, Winona Ryder seemed to understand none of it, growing visibly more confused and concerned with Harbour’s addiction as she listened. Interestingly, Harbour claimed that another video game saved him from dedicating his life toWoW, as he says that giving hisSimscharacter the acting careershowed him a reflection of his life as theSimonly played video games while Harbour tried to make it work on its body and speech.
Ryder commented that an actor playingTheSimsis something that could really “mess with your head,” which Harbour confirmed. “That’s what it did,” he said. “And that’s why my life was ruined.” Obviously, the story doesn’t end with Harbour dedicating his life to hisWorld of Warcraftguild, as he has seen some major success in the past few years, starring inStranger Things,Black Widow, and has an interesting role coming up in anew film calledViolent Night.
