Summary

There’s no glossing over the blatantly obvious fact that Bethesda games contain their fair share of glitches. Considering their size and scope, it’s not much of a surprise that players will end up finding awfully specific methods ofbreaking the game, whether intentionally or through sheer chance.

Some bugs will offer players a chance to get rich quickly and duplicate items in their inventory. Other such bugs may end up completely breaking the game, locking players out of quests, and so much more. For those who are interested in cheating their way through the game (or not), be careful either way when trying outOblivionagain, lest these peculiar exploits and issues ruin the experience!

Salmo the Baker beside a collection of bread loaves and Sweetrolls

1Salmo The Baker

Dangerous Loaves

There’sa particular quirk about Salmo the Bakerin the town of Skingrad (some social media addicts may have seen a post about this originating from Twitter). The badly dressed Altmer has lines of code that would get him delivering loaves of bread from his bakery to a nearby inn and lodge at midnight.

However, there are a few issues with all of this. Since nothing is functioning in the code that actually gets him looking for bread and delivering it to said locations, he doesn’t do anything of the sort. In fact, putting bread in his inventory with console commands will crash the game once he reaches one of his locations and eats a loaf.

2Permanent Bound Armor And Weapons

Great Weapons & Armor For No Cost

Bound Armor and Bound Weapon are Conjuration spells that summon special armor and weapons that look like Daedric equipment and are powerful and protective, yet they have no weight whatsoever. It’s perfect for a spell that places them on its user temporarily. Yet, there is indeed a way to keep them forever.

For those who don’t care about upsetting the balance of the game’s difficulty, it’s possible to cast a spell, let the equipped Bound Armor/Weapon get damaged, and then fix them fully with a Repair Hammer. After that, they can be dropped and recollected. They are classed as light armor since they’re weightless, and while they won’t sell for anything, they offermaximum protection in a dangerous place like Cyrodiil.

Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion - A Brush With Death

3Problems With “A Brush With Death”

Proof That Multiple Saves Are Essential

“A Brush With Death” is a unique quest that sends the player into a painted world, fighting Painted Trolls and saving an artist, Rythe Lythandas, within his magical creation. The only way out is to find an enchanted paintbrush that a mischievous thief used on the canvas before entering the world and eventually dying.

There are several bugs during this mission, some of which will lock a player in or out of the painted realm. If his wife is killedbefore she offers the key to the studio, the quest will lock instead of failing, making it impossible to enter. When in the realm, Rythe may not talk about the situation, so the brush or dead thief won’t appear. Plus, when the utensil is returned, there’s a chance that Rythe won’t paint an exit. This is why it’s always important to make multiple save states.

4Paralyze And Pickpocket Dorian

Infinite Gold

How to break the economy of Tamriel: pickpocket a Redguard named Dorian when paralyzed. It’s a wacky sort of glitch and one that remains unpatched officially. Slashing the denizen from the Imperial City Talos Plaza District with a weak weapon (it won’t work if he dies!) coated with a Paralysis poison and instantly pickpocketing him won’t make his gold disappear when taken.

In other words, a player can keep taking a limitless amount of gold repeatedly until they’re rich. He has a negative amount of gold in his possession, meaning that an item can be taken but won’t be removed. Thus, money can keep being taken without it disappearing. Of course, the guards will arrive to make an arrest, so escaping or waiting in jail are the only options, outside of paying half of the stolen money to the Thieves Guild to bribe the sentries.

5Duplication Glitch

A Handy Way To Acquire Spares

With a stack of scrolls, any item can be duplicated, thanks to an unpatched bug. Once the inventory is opened, one must place the cursor on two or more scrolls of the same kind, and then select them. Without closing the inventory, another item must be highlighted and dropped, but not equipped.

After that, presto! Based on the number of scrolls used for the glitch, that number of duplicated items will drop to the floor. It can’t be used on things like weapons and armor that have been damaged, or Nirnroot plans (which makesthat blasted fetch quest all the more annoying to complete!), yet this very much works to this day.

6Reverse-Pickpocket Dangerous Items

Funny But Lethal

Reverse-pickpocketing is not possible inOblivion. However, the exception to the rule is weightless items. These can be placed into someone’s inventory. For instance, by using the Bound Armor/Weapon glitch, an NPC will instantly equip what’s been placed in their pockets.

It’s mischievous fun, yet it’s not recommended with items with a negative enchantment, e.g. Fire Damage, with characters classed as vital. Putting a detrimental effect on an item inflicts said effect repeatedly on its wearer. For instance, placing a weightless Bound Helmet with a Damage Health enchantment on Martin Septim will result in him repeatedly falling unconscious, as he’s classed as a vital character for most of the game.During the fight involving the Great Gate, however, Martin can be killed. If he’s still wearing it, he’ll die, prompting a never-ending loop of game-overs.

At dusk, Cheydinhal Mages Guild

7Problems With “Cheydinhal Recommendation”

Getting Locked Out Of The Mages Guild Quests

Each town in Cyrodiil will need a quest to be completed to progress further in the Mages Guild. In Cheydinhal, the player will need to acquire a Ring of Burden from a nearby well, as instructed by its shady leader, Falcar. However, upon returning it, he’ll disappear, withBlack Soul Gems being found in his quarterswhen checked.

Two glitches will lock players out of this quest, thereby preventing further progression within the guild. Entering and leaving the well for 3 days while the quest is selected in the journal will erase the dead guild member holding the ring in the well. On top of this, said gems can be transformed into regular Grand Soul Gems if a Soul Trap spell or enchantment successfully steals a monster’s soul. This way, they can be used and thus removed from the inventory. With nothing incriminating to hand over, there’s no completing the quest!

8Getting Ratted Out By Unlikely Witnesses…

Never Trust An Oblivion Horse

If the protagonist gets tangled in a crime, and a witness spots them, then the guards will come running, and an arrest will be made. This is apparent with crimes big and small, from theft to straight-up murdering a civilian in an unprovoked attack.

Stealing a horse is quite a serious crime, too. After all, that’s a 250 gold fine per instance. If someone decides to make a steal and escape, while leaving the horse alive in the process, the equestrian will count as a witness as the crime is classed as reported to the guards of the game! Getting ratted out by a horse - whatever next?
