On Wednesday, social media started talking aboutStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. More specifically, the character of Revan was trending and a conversation aboutStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicspun out of it. One of the most interesting revelations to spin out of the online discourse was thatGuardians of the GalaxyandThe Suicide Squaddirector James Gunn is a huge fan ofStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Excited fans pushed Gunn to consider a movie adaptation, but his response was surprising, to say the least.
Asked to “pull some strings” with Disney so that Gunn could make aStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicmovie, Gunn surprised fans by rejecting the idea. Gunn both doesn’t want to make the movie and doesn’t want to see it made into a movie. In explanation, Gunn says that, “Just because it’s a perfect video game doesn’t mean it needs to be a movie.” In other words, Gunn thinksStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicdeserves to be appreciatedin the medium it was originally created in.

Gunn’s devotion toStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicis apparent in the several tweets he shared on the topic. Gunn explains that he believesStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicis “still the greatest video game of all time.” He says that it’shis favoriteStar Wars-related media, across games, movies, TV shows, and even toys and comics. Clearly, Gunn holdsStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicin high regard.
Regardless of Gunn’s feelings on the matter, he has no real control over theStar Warsfranchise’s directionin either film or video games. It’s entirely possible thatStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicmoves forward in some capacity in the future. All Gunn is saying that he believes the original video game is sacred and that he won’t be involved with any project that does move forward.
There have absolutely been rumors aboutStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicbeing made into a movie, too. In 2019, a rumor spread that Laeta Kalogridis was writing aStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicscreenplay forLucasfilm. In early 2020, that rumor expanded to include both a movie and a TV show. No recent news has been shared about the possibility.
As far as video games go, there are also rumors regardingStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicprojects. For example, a remake was rumored to be made by Aspyr. AStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3has also been rumored, though from a surprising developer unaffiliated with Electronic Arts. It seems inevitable thatStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicreturns eventually in some capacity. Hopefully, whatever form it takes, it lives up to the series' legacy and its fans' expectations.
