Taking place five years afterStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order,Star Wars Jedi: Survivorleaves a pretty big gap in Cal Kestis and crew’s narrative. When players first boot upStar Wars Jedi: Survivorthey’re kept in the dark for a few hours on the whereabouts of Cal’s old team, but gradually over the course of the game they’ll meet back up withGreez, Merrin, and Cere, all of whom have seemingly changed quite a bit in the last few years, both in terms of personality and appearance.
When the team is finally reunited, it’s still not quite a return to the familial dynamic players left them in atthe end ofJedi: Fallen Order, with Cal clearly harboring some resentment at the rest of his team’s decision to leave the Mantis. But while all the Mantis crew had their own particular reason for leaving, none is quite as obvious as Greez’s, who lost his arm during one of the team’s final missions.

How Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Greez Lost His Arm
While it’s referenced a few times duringStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, it’s never actually explained in-game as to how Greez lost his arm. For that information, fans need to read the recently releasedprequel novel,Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars. Set some time after the events ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order,Battle Scarsopens with the Mantis crew infiltrating a Haxion Brood bounty hunter base. While escaping the base, the crew are confronted by a Stormtrooper who tells them they wish to defect and join their crew. The now ex-Stormtrooper tells them of a mysterious device called the Shroud, an all-powerful cloaking device that could turn the tide of the war for the Rebels.
On their journey to find the Shroud, the Mantis crew head to Murkhana, a prison planet, where they encounter the Fifth Brother for the first time. A member ofthe Sith Inquisitorius, the Fifth Brother is almost successful in killing Cal, but Cere blocks his lightsaber blow at the last moment. While Cere continues to fight the Fifth Brother, Greez makes his way to assist her. Greez arrives just as Cere gains the advantage over the Inquisitor, but rather than strike him down, Cere decides to try and convert him to the Light Side.
The Fifth Brother resists Cere’s speech, and seizing an opportunity to strike, the Fifth Brother swings at her. But rather than hit Cere, the Fifth Brother’s lightsabermakes contact with Greez, who flings himself in front of Cere to protect her. The Fifth Brother’s lightsaber slices clean through Greez’s arm, but it gives Cere a brief moment to gain the upper hand once again, and the crew manages to escape by the skin of their teeth.
By the time players meet up with Greez inStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, he’s decided to leave his Empire-fighting days behind him, and he’s set up a cantina on Koboh, in a small settlement called Rambler’s Ranch. Though he never mentions it directly, Greez can be seen holding his new cybernetic arm when he pleads with Cal to take a break from fighting with the Empire, which acts as a fairly subtle nod to the very literal loss that Greez has felt at the Empire’s hands. But despite Greez’s desperate pleas for Cal to settle down and leave his rebellious life behind, he still agrees to help his friend on his new journey, even though he knows it’ll likely only lead to more loss.
