Summary
Gravity is an ever-present danger in the life of a web-swinging crime fighter, andMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is taking an interesting approach to fall damage. Insomniac’s series of open-worldSpider-Mangames is well-regarded for many reasons, includingits high-flying web transversal gameplay that lets fans do whatever a spider can above the bustling streets of New York City.Marvel’s Spider-Man 2will offer players even more sights and heights, as the game’s map is reported to betwice the size of its predecessorsthanks to the addition of Queens and Brooklyn.
The recentMarvel’s Spider-Manwasn’t the first licensed superhero game to give players a free-roaming sandbox to run, jump, and swing through as Marvel’s legendary arachnid-themed vigilante, andpastSpider-Manvideo gameslike the 2004Spider-Man 2movie tie-in andUltimate Spider-Manfeatured fall damage. If Spidey were to collide with the pavement at a great height in any of those titles, he could lose a significant portion of his heath or even die. Insomniac left this fall damage out of 2018’sMarvel’s Spider-Manand 2020’sSpider-Man: Miles Morales, allowing Peter Parker and Miles Morales to pick themselves up after an impromptu landing from 20 feet up.

While this is similar to how actual spiders can survive falls from impossible heights, some fans have wished for fall damage toreturn inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Insomniac is granting their request with a twist. In a recent video, YouTuber Blitzwing pointed out thatSpider-Man 2will let players take fall damage - adding a new element of danger to Peter and Miles’s high-altitude patrols. More risk-averse players can disable fall damage if they would rather let the spider heroes survive a drop from New York’s tallest skyscraper.
Fans of Insomniac’s previous twoSpider-Mantitles have been waiting anxiously forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2since its announcement in 2021, and they will be able to dive into it on October 20.Spider-Man 2continues whereMarvel’s Spider-ManandSpider-Man: Miles Moralesleft off, as Peter and Miles are faced with a slew of new villains like Venom and Kraven the Hunter. Peter Parker’s infamous black Symbiote costume will also make an appearance, granting the veteran web-slinger new abilities at the risk of corrupting him forever.
Deadly supervillains and parasitic alien outfits won’t be the only dangers players will be faced with inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, as the game’s optional fall damage means that every jump and swing could spell disaster if Spidey isn’t quick with his web-shooters. This is just one of the ways Insomniac is looking to give players a more immersive gameplay experience, but fans can choose to deactivate it if they would rather play through the latestSpider-Mantitle without having to worry about the perils of gravity.
