In a ntower interview with Naoto Ohshima, he was asked howSonic Superstars' has evolved from the classic 2D games. He explains that one of the things he wanted to do was create a 2DSonicgame where there are no lives or game-over features. As such,Sonic Superstarsfeatures neither traditional element, though it does affect the game by what is rewarded when players collect 100 rings. In almost every otherSonicgame, collecting 100 rings gives the player a 1UP. InSuperstars, however, the 1UPs are being replaced with a new collectible, medals.
InSuperstars, medals are awarded to the player regularly, such as players being able to find them in the bonus stages or whenever 100 rings are collected. These medals can then be used in the battle mode, where they can be spent for more parts to customize their robot however they like. As demonstrated in therelease date trailer forSonic Superstars, the player can customize their playable character for battle mode, changing how they look.
Ohshima also confirms that the new battle mode provides completely new Metallic robot copies of the playable characters. The franchise never featured a “Metal Tails” or “Metal Amy” outsidetheSonic the HedgehogArchie Comics, for example. This game’s versions of robotic duplicates for Tails and Amy are designed by Kazuyuki Hoshino, who previously designed Metal Sonic. Many fans were also happy to see thatSuperstars' battle mode will feature a customizable Metal Knuckles, who first appeared inSonic Rbut never had a chance to shine outside the comics.
Sonic Superstarswill release on October 17 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
