Last year at the annual Gamescom event, Deep SIlver and Volition announced a total reboot to theSaints Rowfranchise. While the announcement showcased a lot of what fans like about the series, open world, high action, and humor mixed in, theSaints Rowreveal also saw plenty of criticism and backlashfrom those who weren’t thrilled by the visual style as well as the main cast of characters. Many longtime fans felt the reboot strayed too far from the previous games and their gang-inspired roots for something more modernized and what many refered to as “soulless.”
However, Volition continued to defend its ideals and vision for the newSaints Row, even through a delay that moved that game’s original February launch date into August. While the extra time has no doubt helped the end product, it has also given Volition more time to show off the game, with recent announcements and reveals seemingly satisfying many of those who were concerned during the announcement.Saints Rowfeatures a deep customization systemfor characters, weapons, and even vehicles as well as a new gameplay mechanic called Criminal Ventures. However, new reports indicate Saints Row is brining even more wild gameplay elements for combat.

According to a new report, combat and perks inSaints Rowact a bit differently than in previous iterations. They’re all dictated by a new mechanic called Flow, which earns players points for doing things like dealing damage, dodging attacks, destroying vehicles and more. These Flow Points can then be used to activate perks and abilities, with stronger moves needing more Flow Points to activate.
Abilities inSaints Roware earned through the traditional way of progressing a character’s level through XP. These are active powers, so players will have to press a specific button to use them once enough Flow Points are gained. Some examples of abilities are Ninja, which tosses a smoke bomb down to escape enemies and Surprise which has the character dropping a live grenade down an enemy’s pants as they’re then pushed into a larger group. There’s also a move called Flaming Uppercut, which acts similar to Ryu’s Street Fighter move where the character upper cuts an enemy into the air.
In addition to abilities, players can unlock newperks to unlock advantages duringSaints Rowgameplay and combat. These are acquired through a variety of means including completing challenges, missions, side activities, as well as outright purchasing them from in-game stores. There are three types: Basic, Advanced, and Ultimate, which range from smaller advantages like moving faster while aiming or gaining a health boost after an execution, to more extreme benefits like calling in a missile barrage.
As interesting as all of this may sound for players, it’s worth noting that this information is unofficial and should be taken with a grain of salt for now. However, as the release date is now only a few months away, and with plenty of gaming events likeSummer Games Fest coming starting in June, it’s highly likely that Volition will be revealing more onSaints Rowsooner than later.
