In 2014, Microsoft releasedHalo: The Master Chief Collectionfor Xbox One. An ambitious compilation featuringHalo: Combat Evolved Anniversary,a remaster ofHalo 2,Halo 3, andHalo 4,The Master Chief Collectiongives players a dizzying amount of content in a single package. The Master Chief Collectionhad a very rocky start, and it took some time to get the collection in a technically-sound state, but it’s improved greatly in the years since, fixing problems, adding brand-new content, and throwing moreHalogames into the mix.

Now it seems Microsoft may be preparing to release another project similar toHalo: The Master Chief Collection. Back in January, noted Xbox leaker Shpeshal_Nick suggested that aMaster Chief Collection-style collection was in the worksfor one of Xbox’s major franchises, but stopped short of specifying what the franchise would be. Speculation pointed to theFableorGears of Warseries, but a new podcast has potentially narrowed it down.

Speaking on the XboxEra podcast, Shpeshal_Nick once again did not specify what series the collection would be about, but said that “everyone’s guessed it,” and hinted it would beForza,Halo, orGears of War. AHalocollection is already out, and it wouldn’t make much sense to release aForzacollection since it’s a racing game franchise, so that just leaveGears of War.

Shpeshal_Nick believes that this collection will be out at some point later this year, and that it will potentially be announced at the upcoming Xbox showcase event. While E3 2022 has been canceled,Xbox is hosting a showcase on June 12where it will make its big E3-level announcements. AGears of Warcollection would definitely fit the bill as a big announcement, though fans will have to stay tuned to find out if it actually comes to pass.

Some might be wondering what the point of aGears of Warcollection would be, however. WithThe Master Chief Collection, most of its games weren’t readily available to play on Xbox One, especially since that was before the console launched the backward compatibility program. In the case ofGears of War, every single game in the series is already available to play on the newest Xbox hardware, including theGears Tacticsspin-off game andthe remastered version of the originalGears of War.

Perhaps this supposed collection will include aGears of War 2remasteror maybe, if fans are lucky, remasters for bothGears of War 2and3to bring the games up to the level of the remaster for the originalGears of War. This way Xbox gamers could play through the entireGears of Warexperience in higher quality while they wait for more news on the inevitableGears of War 6.
