Update 7/24: It’s now been clarified thatTombaisnotcoming to Xbox, despite what its ESRB rating suggests.
Original story follows.
The re-release of the classic PlayStation 1 gameTomba!appears to be coming to Xbox as well as its previously announced platforms, if a recent ESRB rating is accurate, anyway.Tombawas first released as aPlayStation 1exclusive in 1997. A side-scrolling platformer,Tombawas notable for its unique art style and Metroidvania gameplay elements. The game didn’t sell all that well when it first launched, but it was popular enough to justify the development of a sequel,Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return.
Tombais remembered fondly asone of the best PS1 platformers, but it’s unfortunately somewhat difficult to play nowadays. Those that don’t have a copy of the PS1 original can purchase it on PS3, but at the time of this writing, the game is not playable on modern platforms. That will change on August 1, whenTomba: Special Editionis released for PS5 with various enhancements.

Besides PS5,Tomba: Special Editionis also coming to PC, PS4, and Switch, though a release date for those versions of the game has not been announced at the time of this writing. There’s been no mention of an Xbox port forTomba: Special Edition, but the ESRB rating for the game has indicated that such a project may very well be in development. TheESRB has given the game an E10+ rating(the original was simply rated E for Everyone), while listing it as coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series consoles. If the Xbox version ofTomba: Special Editiondoes exist, hopefully Limited Run Games offers some clarification sooner rather than later.
Tomba: Special Edition Listed for Xbox
Those excited aboutTomba’s big comeback on modern consoles should note that the sequel is getting similar treatment. A specific release date hasn’t been announced at the time of this writing, but aTomba 2: The Evil Swine Returnre-release is coming to all the same platformsasTomba: Special Editionat some point in 2025. IfTomba: Special Editionis coming to Xbox this ESRB rating indicates, one has to imagine that the same will hold true for the new version ofTomba 2: The Evil Swine Return.
Limited Run Games has been using its Carbon Engine to bring classic games from yesteryear to modern platforms with a great deal of success. BesidesTomba, fans of classic platformers will also want to keep an eye onLimted Run Games’Gex Trilogyre-release, which will bundle the three PS1-eraGexgames into a single package.
