Activision is developing a replacement toDestiny, a new leak has revealed.DestinydeveloperBungie split from Activisionin early 2019 and took the rights to the series with it leaving fans wondering what that could mean for the sci-fi RPG series.

On Twitter, gaming YouTuber TheGamingRevolution leaked several Activision games such as arumoredTony Hawk’s Pro Skaterremasterand a free to playCall of Dutygame that will released in 2021. One fan told the YouTuber that they were “disappointed” that Activision isn’t developing a new IP and TheGamingRevolution responded that “there is a replacement toDestinyin the works.” The YouTuber said that they don’t know what thisDestinyreplacement is.

It’s no surprise that Activision wants to create a new replacement forDestinyas that series is hugely popular and makes millions of dollars. The firstDestinyset sales records for the company when it was released in 2014,Destiny 2’s sales also performed well and the series makes money from the sale of DLC expansions and microtransactions at its Eververse store.

What would also have been important to Activision is thatDestinyhas an incredibly active community of players who play the game each day and talk about it a lot on social media. Declining player counts in games likeOverwatchandHearthstoneled to lower Activision revenue and prompted the company tolay off hundreds of employees. Making a new game likeDestinycould help Activision to grow its player counts in a big way.

It won’t be easy for the company though and other publishers have tried and failed to copyDestiny’s success. EA and BioWare tried to create a successful sci-fi RPG withAnthem. However, the game disappointed fans and criticis and nowBioWare is working on a majorAnthemreboot. Activision does have a strong hand here as it was the publisher ofDestinybut that does’t mean that it won’t be difficult.

Activision also faces more competition. WhileAnthemcould potentially grow its popularity, games likePS5 launch titleGodfallhave also been compared toDestinyand more publishers are releasing live service shooters.Destinywas an exciting title when it was released in 2014 but many games like it have been releasing since so if Activision wants to reach that same success, it’s going to have to work very hard.

Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
