Summary
The firstRed Dead Redemptionwas a huge game, at least by 2010 standards. While the open-world genre (in its modern and most recognizable form) had been around for almost a decade at that point,Red Dead Redemptionstill pushed the boundaries of what gamers thought possible from the genre, delivering a lengthy 30-hour story set against the backdrop of a vastWild West-themed open-world. But eight years later,Red Dead Redemption 2would blow expectations out of the water.
In the years that came between the first and secondRed Dead Redemptiongames, the open-world genre only continued to grow, both in size and popularity. Even with such stiff competition,Red Dead Redemption 2broke new ground for the genre. With a 50+ hour long campaign, hundreds of side activities ranging from hand-crafted missions to mini-games, and enough Easter eggs to keep fans busy for years to come,Red Dead Redemption 2is one of the most dense and expansive games ever made, and only the most hardcore fans have seen everything that the game has to offer. But it’s these hardcore fans thatRed Dead Redemption 3should reward.
While it may only have a 6/10 difficulty rating on the renowned Platinum trophy-hunting guide site PowerPyx,Red Dead Redemption 2has become widely known as one of the most challenging games to reach 100% completion. This is mostly due to the sheer volume of activities the player needs to complete in order to reach that 100% milestone. Referring to PowerPyx once more,Red Dead Redemption 2’s Platinum journeycan take anywhere between 240 and 300 hours, with its single-player content alone taking at least 200 hours to finish.
EveryStranger mission, every collectible, every missable side quest, every challenge, every fossil, and every animal needs to be carefully remembered, completed, and logged by the player. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but theRed Dead Redemption 2Platinum journey can actually feel incredibly rewarding. This Platinum trophy forces players to see absolutely everything thatRed Dead Redemption 2has to offer, and for die-hard fans of the game, it’s a solid excuse to continue living in that world for as long as possible.
Though its existence hasn’t been confirmed, and any potential reveal is likely still many years away,Red Dead Redemption 3is probably an inevitability given how beloved the series is and how successful the last two entries have been. AndwhenRed Dead Redemption 3does eventually arrive, it seems safe to assume that it’ll be just as big, if not bigger, thanRed Dead 2. And that could mean an even more challenging road to 100% completion.
IfRed Dead Redemption 3does end up being an even greater juggernaut than its already-huge predecessor, then its even lengthier Platinum journey should offer more frequent rewards than the feeling of just seeing everything that the game has to offer. For instance, ifRed Dead 3ships with an online mode, it might be fun to see players get rewarded with exclusive skins or avatars based on specific milestones along the Platinum journey, such as a unique trapper skin for hunting every animal in the game, or a sheriff’s outfit for completing every optional bounty.
