[UPDATE: The PSN service status stage confirms that Gaming and Social are back to normal.]

PSN Services related to gaming and social are down for allPS4servers late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning. As of this writing, Sony has yet to give an official update on when services might return, but it is certainly causing a small headache for gamers.

Reports on social media started appearing around 8:30pm PT saying that access to both games and party options are not working. Those that visited the PSN service status website at the time saw no issues, but eventually, a red light appeared next to“Gaming and Social.”The official downtime began at 9:02pm PT, with Sony’s page saying players “may have some difficulty launching games, applications, or online features.”

The good news is that not all PS4 owners seem to be affected by the outage. Plenty of users are able to log on to popular online PS4 releases likeCall of Duty: WarzoneandResident Evil: Resistancewithout any issue. Some noticed they were getting knocked offline as well, but were busy focusing on single player titles likeFinal Fantasy 7: Remake. Either way, the PSN services page confirms that there is an active outage and so there are plenty of people unable to access the games that they paid for and use their subscription.

Since the recent situation has given rise to increased Internet use and gaming overall, several online services including PSN andXbox Live have had issues. In most cases, the engineers for the respective platforms have been able to get things fixed relatively quickly, but the frustration is still there. Some countries are even trying to help avoid situations like this, and to protect essential services that rely on Internet, but slowing down speeds. PSN was among those services that would try to slow speeds when necessary, but it hasn’t been noticeable enough to draw criticism.

However, this increase in active online users can typically put a lot more stress on the servers and that’s likely what’s happening right now. It’s a little strange that it would happen on a Wednesday night and not following a big game launch, but perhaps the timing was just bad.

Game Rant will update this post as soon as services resume.
