TERAmay not be the most popular fantasy MMO, but it has been praised by fans in the years since it launched back in 2012. It has dynamic gameplay with a fast-paced combat system allowing players a lot of manual input in when they strike and dodge. There is a fully fleshed out fantasy world for players to explore, and over 13 classes to choose from. Some even compared it asan alternative toFinal Fantasy 14.
Even without ever climbing to the very top of the MMORPGladder,TERAproved to have a loyal fanbase and there were consistent content updates to the game. However, when it was announced back in 2020 thatTERA’spublisher En Masse Entertainment was shutting down, many feared for the state of the game. Now, nearly two years later, those fears have become a reality as new publisher Gameforge announces thatTERAwill be shut down.

Announced in a post onTERA’sofficial Twitter account, the popular MMO will be brought to an end later this year. According to Gameforge, the company believes it cannot provide fans with the quality contentTERAplayers deserve. Gameforge states that it has “happily hosted a great community inTERA"for almost a decade. While the studio claims it would continue to serve players for even longer, according to developer shortages this is simply not possible and has led to the ultimate decision to shut down the game’s servers.
TERAplayers have been given news on when they won’t be able to log on anymore. According to Gameforge, the ability to purchase any item from theTERAclub will be deactivated on May 31st. On June 30th, allTERAservers will then be deactivated. Gameforge didn’t mention on how this would affectTERA’sconsole ports, but it can be assumed that they will face a similar shut-down, as the studio noted that migration options won’t be available. Likely,TERAfans will be gathering together on June 30th to say goodbye to the MMO, just asHalo Reachplayersdid some months ago to celebrate their times with that game.
Server shut-downs are a sad day for any gamer who remembers fondly the time they spent with a virtual world. For some, it can mark the end of an era, as their favorite game is no longer playable. Recently, a few other games have seen server shut down announcements, such asEverybody’s Golf Online.EA is also shutting down the servers for multipleNHLtitles, as the gaming industry moves onto newer games.
