While the most addicting part of a battle royale is the traditional main course of last man/last squad standing, many have introduced Limited Time Modes as well to introduce some variety to the player diet. Some limited time modes have ranged from simple and minimalistic ruleset changes, to vastly different temporary modes that significantly change how the game’s traditionally played. Games likeFortnitehave balanced on both sides of that spectrum, butWarzonehas made a huge splash that some LTMs may be on the way toCall of Duty’s battle royale.

Fans ofCall of Dutyseem to have rejoiced and welcomedWarzonewith open arms, considering the game has quickly become one of the most popular battle royales released thus far. As time goes on, andWarzone’s metagame solidifies, players will likely be in search of variety inWarzone’s experience to shake things up. That’s why limited time modes being included inWarzonewould be perfect. Here are a few concepts that could be worked into LTMs forWarzone.

Faster Circle Speeds

A relatively simple concept borrowed fromFortnite, a fun LTM forWarzonewould be a fast-moving circle.Similar toFortnite’s Blitz LTM, bringing a faster-moving safe zone toWarzonewould emphasize whatCall of Dutydoes best. A lot of timesWarzone, like other large maps in battle royale games, has these great lulls in action as players traverse further into the circle’s safe zone. Short-lived safe zones means higher paced gameplay, somethingCall of Dutyhas been masterful at crafting in its traditional multiplayer modes. One of the best ways to ramp up the intensity is to reduce circle timing and make the pressure on players mount quicker than usual.

Big Team Battles

Another simplistic LTM forWarzonewould be to incorporatea big-team-battle mode for the battle royale. Again, somethingFortnitepioneered with the 50v50 LTM, but a large team deathmatch that matches withWarzone’s high player count would be exciting. Certain regions of the map could be isolated and rotate between each match like a traditional team deathmatch, but with an immensely greater team size. ConsideringWarzonealready supports 150-player-matches, the game could implement its own 75v75 mode as well.

Hero Battles

This particular concept is a bit harder to envision, butWarzonecould implement its own Hero Battle-styled LTM. Iconic characters from theCall of Dutyfranchise, from Captain Price to Victor Reznov, would be able to join each match with their own specific special abilities. From those who rememberthe originalStar Wars: Battlefront 2from 2005, there was a specific mode on Tatooine called “Hero Assault” where players could play as iconicStar Warsheroes and villains. It’d be interesting to see aCall of Dutyversion of this mode inWarzone, featuring iconic characters from the whole franchise, each of whom utilizing their own unique abilities.

RPGs Only, Or Something Like It

On the more absurdly fun side of things, an interesting LTM forWarzonewould be some kind of team deathmatch or arcade mode with a random modifier or restriction. One specific example would be if it was like any otherWarzonematch but all of the weapon loot was just RPGs. Picking situational weapon types, or specific guns, could help change up the gameplay in awkward but entertaining ways.Halohas implemented a lot of custom modeswith tons of random modifiers like “Team Snipers” or Slayer modes with rocket launchers only. Finding weapons that have very situational/tactical uses in regular multiplayer modes, but restricting players to only using these weapons or equipment, makes for some serious hilarity or absurdity that would be a nice change of pace from the seriousness of battle royale.

Gun Game In Warzone

Lastly, a potentially interesting utilization ofWarzone’s battle royale would be to implement some kind of Gun Game variant.Gun Game inCall of Dutyis an arcade multiplayer mode that’s similar to free-for-all, but with a significant twist. Each kills bumps the player up a weapon tier, where they either unlock a better or worse weapon to get their next kill. It’sCall of Duty’s signature frenetic nature condensed into a single game mode that’s incredibly addicting. Adding a variant of Gun Game toWarzonewould be incredibly fun, whilst serving to shake up the typical battle royale gameplay by replacing loot with encouraging kills. Rather than focusing on finding loot, a Gun Game variant of battle royale would force players to attack one another so they can get better weapons. It’d be a genius flip on the typical mechanics of battle royale games.

Those are just a few examples of limited time modes that could come toWarzonein the future.Call of Duty: Warzoneapparently already has plans for its next big expansion, which reportedly is a tie-in toBlack Ops. While it’ll be interesting to see how this new side quest pans out over time, perhapsWarzonewill incorporate a few more LTMs to the mode in the future.
