Not one to follow trends in the gaming industry, Nintendo is a company that does things its own way. From the motion controls of the Wii to thefailed VR headset known as the Virtual Boy, the Japanese game company has developed and sold a number of unique pieces of gaming equipment. One of Nintendo’s more modern but still strange designs was the Joy-Con controller for the Switch. Recently, one gamer decided to create their own themed Joy-Cons based on thePokemonseries.
A creative Pokemon fan decided to give their set of Joy-Cons a redesign. Using their artistic talent, the creator gave the controllers a paint job. With red and white paint, they transformed the look of the Joy-Cons to resemblethe iconic Poke Ballfrom thePokemonseries. Each controller is split into 2 colors by a black line: the upper half colored red and the lower half colored white.

In a post on Reddit, the fan, known as iloveulongtime, revealed some of the details behind the creation of the custom controllers based onPokemon. They noted that before painting the Joy-Cons, they scuffed the outer casings with Scotch-Brite. This was done to have the primer stick better to the surface. The creator then applied coats of primer to the controllers after cleaning them with soap and water. After applying the primer, they added base coats and then used automotive masking tape “to create the Poke Ball look.” To finish off the design, the artist added a few coats of satin clear coat.
Beyond giving a glimpse into how they made the design, iloveulongtime also offered a few tips to those interested in painting their own custom Joy-Cons. They cautioned against airbrushing, saying that “you’re able to mess it up if you have the wrong base color or the paint is too thin or the pressure is too low or high.” In addition, the artist advised aspiring painters to wait to apply a new coat of primer or paint until the previous coat has dried.
ThePokemoncommunity on Reddit is loving these new custom Joy-Cons from iloveulongtime. The post has already gained nearly 800 upvotes with many users commenting that the creator nailed the design. WhileNintendo offers special Joy-Consfor fans to purchase, this new Poke Ball design from the creator on Reddit certainly stands out.
