Overwatchis coming to the Nintendo Switch in just 12 days. It’s actually pretty incredible that Blizzard Entertainment’s popular hero-shooter is coming to the system, but not just because it means fans will soon be able to take the action on the go withthe portable Nintendo Switch port ofOverwatch. HavingOverwatchon a Nintendo console opens the door for the game to see representation in theSuper Smash Brosseries, and that’s a possibility thatOverwatch’s director, Jeff Kaplan, is very open to.
The notion ofOverwatchcharacters appearing inSuper Smash Bros Ultimate, the currentSmash Bros.game, is one that Blizzard has commented on in the past. Back then, however, its producers refrained from specifying which of the game’s 30+ heroes they think would be a good fit for the 2D crossover fighter. That’s why IGN, in a recent interview with Kaplan, specifically asked him which hero he would like to see included.

This led to Kaplan directing his response at Nintendo. “To theSmash Brothersteam, whatever character you want, we love them all. They’re all our babies, you can have any single one of them. We have 31 to choose from.” But since that wasn’t the question, Kaplan did eventually confirm that, if he had to pick one hero, it would beTracer. Which is probably the most sensible choice, being as Tracer is the hero on the game’s box art and the de-facto face ofOverwatch.

“Tracer’s our girl, Tracer’s our mascot. She’d be my first choice,” Kaplan said of the time-hopping dual-pistol-user. “There’s a lot of great runners up. I think a lot of people can immediately see Doomfist gameplay applying toSmash, but if it were up to me, I’d like to see Tracer.”
Echoing that sentiment was fellow Blizzard executive Wes Yanagi, the chief producer in charge of bringingOverwatchto the Switch, who agreed that Tracer would be the best choice. That said, he also stated that he wouldn’t mind it if Winston, with his aggressive tank-like skillset and interesting mobility options, ended up inSmash Bros.instead.
As of this writing, only two more DLC fighters remain to be added toSuper Smash Bros Ultimatevia the game’s Fighter Pass, which areFatal Fury’s Terry Bogard and one currently-unannounced character. However, Nintendo has confirmed that there will bemore DLC fighters inSuper Smash Bros Ultimateafter the Fighter Pass. How many more hasn’t been said, but given the popularity of Overwatch, it’s very possible that Tracer or one of its other heroes could end up being among them.
Overwatchis currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and the Switch version will be out on October 15.
