A new report about thePlayStation 5reveals that Sony’s newest console just had its best year yet. Asteady stream of PS5-exclusive titlesalong with production finally reaching consumer demand are some factors to be considered when looking at the system’s impressive recent quarters.
Sony’sPlayStation 5launched to tumultuous beginnings. COVID-related production shortages resulted in purchasing a PS5 being nothing short of a daunting task through 2021 and even part of 2022. Sony and Microsoft’s next generation of gaming was notoriously inaccessible, as scalpers controlled much of the limited stock and charged exorbitant prices. Thankfully, though, those times are in the past now, and the PlayStation 5 has done nothing but trend upwards since its production shortage issues have dissipated.

The most recent Sony quarterly earnings report shows just how well the PlayStation 5 has been doing recently. The console has sold over 38 million units in total as of the end of March 2023. That’s significantly more units sold than the PlayStation 4 had after an equal amount of time on the market back in 2016. Interestingly enough, theXbox Series X/S is also outpacing its predecessor’s lifetime sales. There were 6.3 million PS5 units sold during Q4 between 2022 and 2023. A year earlier, Q4 ended with just 2 million units sold, meaning sales have more than tripled this time around.
Sony Interactive Entertainment presidentJim Ryan said the PlayStation 5 stock shortage is overat the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. This newfound ease of access to purchase these in-demand consoles plays a major role in the sales seeing such a dramatic increase in just a year’s time. Major exclusive titles also factor in, though, with games likeGod Of War RagnarokandHorizon Forbidden Westbeing major system sellers.
Sony’s upcoming lineup of exclusives will likely maintain the winning streak of the PlayStation 5 as well, with major franchises set to release games in the near future that will be hard for many gamers to ignore. Games likeFinal Fantasy XVI,Spider-Man 2, and the newWolverinegame are all set to give PS5 the edge over its competition in the latter half of 2023 moving into 2024. Plus,PlayStation recently acquired a new development studiowith plans to unveil a brand-new co-op shooter IP sometime soon. It’s certainly not a given that thePS5will continue its streak of popularity like what it’s seen over the past year, but if it does it may very well be passing the all-time sales for the PS4 before too long.
