TheMonster Hunterfranchise has been very successful as of late, with multiple lucrative video game titles both released and on the horizon.Monster Hunter: Worldwas released in January 2018, sold record franchise numbers, and was nominated for multiple Game Of The Year awards. Afterward,Monster Hunter RiseandMonster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruinwere both released earlier this year to healthy sales numbers. Meanwhile, alive-action adaptation of theMonster Hunterfranchisewas attempted byResident Evilfilm series director Paul W.S. Anderson and released in late 2020 but it was widely considered a critical and commercial misfire.

Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guildis a feature film, but not by much since its runtime stands at a modest fifty-eight minutes. The film follows a young hunter named Aiden who teams up with a band of more experienced hunters to save his village from a menacing dragon.Legends of the Guildwas made by Pure Imagination Studios, who previously developed the short filmLEGO Jurassic World: Indominus Escapefor The LEGO Group and Universal Studios. Directed by Hollywood visual effects supervisor Steve Yamamoto from a script written byThe Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroesepisode story writer Joshua Fine,Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guildstars notable voice actors such as Erica Lindbeck, who voiced Black Cat inMarvel’s Spider-Man.
Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guildcomes at a time when established entertainment franchises are dabbling in atypical mediums across the board. TheDragon Questfranchise has the anime seriesDragon Quest: The Adventures of Daipremiering new episodes this Summer, while theGhost in the Shell SAC_2045CG anime series is streaming on Netflix. Furthermore, Warner Bros. recently signed onGhost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complexchief writer Kenji Kamiyama to direct an anime film based on theLord of the Ringsfranchise titledThe War of the Rohirrim.
Capcom and other video game companies are no strangers to presenting CG-animated films based on their top-bill franchises. Their latest CG-animatedResident Evilseries,Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, was recently released to stream on Netflix and was met with warm reception.
So,Legends of the Guildmay not be a groundbreaking feature film when it comes to animated spin-offs of licensed IPs. However, the film will likely garner the attention ofMonster Hunterfans and potentially allow the franchise to gain some new followers along the way.
