Netflix’s upcoming live-adaptation of the emblematic animeOne Piecewill soon hit the streaming platform. As fans gear up to see the story of Monkey D. Luffy come to life once again, the cast and crew of the show took to The Anime Expo 2023 in Los Angeles to reveal some important and exciting news about their series.
The anime show ofOne Piecefirst debuted in Fuji TV in October 1999. An adaptation ofEiichiro Oda’s Manga series, the story follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who has always longed for a life of freedom, as he sets out on an adventure with his crew called the Straw Hat Pirates to find a treasure and become King of the Pirates. In July 2017, it was announced that Tomorrow Studios would start developing aOne Piecelive-adaptation series as part of the series' 20th anniversary celebration. However, it was not until 2020, that Netflix ordered a first season consisting of ten episodes, which were to be developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda.

Now, as the series approaches its release date of August 31, the cast (which includes Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson and Taz Skylar) have embarked on a press tour to promote the series, which included The Anime Expo in Los Angeles during the 4th of July holiday weekend,Deadlinereports. During the convention, the cast released a video in which Godoy, who will interpret Luffy, travels to Japan to meet voice actress Mayumi Tanaka,who voiced the same characterin the anime series. After sharing various embraces and exchanging words of gratitude for their commitment to the character, the pair revealed that Tanaka would reprise the role of Luffy in the dubbed version of the Netflix show.
Following the emotional video, the cast was once again shown at the Expo, where they revealed that the rest of the original cast would come back to voice their roles once again. Among the returning actors are Kazuya Nakai as Roronoa Zoro, Akemi Okamura as Nami, Kappei Yamaguchi as Usopp and Hiroaki Hirata as Sanji. It was also revealed during the announcement that Godoy andSkylar will also voice their characters of Sanjiand Luffy in the Spanish version of the show. “So that begs the age-old question, dubs or subs?” Godoy said at the end of the video.
It should not come as a surprise that these actors are still willing to get their hands on the story, after allOne Pieceis a fan-favorite and faithful adaptationto one of the longest running Manga series in history, as well as one of the longest anime series with over 1,000 episodes released to date.
One Pieceis hitting Netflix on July 16, 2025.
