Capcom’sMonster Hunterseries is arguably one of the company’s most successful franchises, especially within the handheld market. With the impending release ofMonster Hunter Riselater this week and anotherMonster Huntertitle on the way, fans will have many dragons to look forward to for months and years to come.
The secondMonster Huntertitle releasing this year on the Switch,Monster Hunter Stories 2, is, as the name suggests, more story-driven than the traditional gameplay featured inRise. The sequel to theoriginal released on the 3DS,Stories 2will feature the same turn-based gameplay as the original, with co-op multiplayer included and cross-compatibility withRise. While the game isn’t open-world likeRise, the storage size ofStories 2is surprisingly hefty for a Switch title.

Officially revealed on Nintendo Australia’s game page, the file size forMonster Hunter Stories 2is expected to be 14.6 GB. Compared toMonster Hunter Rise’s6.6 GB, the spinoffMonster Huntertitle is over two times the size of its main counterpart. A better comparison isthe file size forShin Megami Tensei Nocturne HD, another RPG set to release soon on the Switch, rounding at around 6 GB. Amusingly, the original file size ofMonster Hunter Storieson the 3DS was only 1.8 GB in size.
Amiibo support was recently announced forMonster Hunter Stories 2, with the titleconfirmed to have at least three different amiiboson launch. The game will also have a deluxe edition and pre-order bonuses for players, including several exclusive armor sets and sticker sets to use in-game.
Following the discovery ofStories 2’s file size, fans are concerned about the amount of contentRisewill have compared toStories 2based on the file sizes between the two games. In the past, however,Monster Huntergames have been notoriously small in size compared to the amount of content the games have to offer. On launch,Monster Hunter Worldestimated around 16 GBand it became one of Capcom’s most successful titles in the past decade despite its small size compared to other PS4 titles at the time.
Fans expecting the originalMonster Hunter Storiesto return in some capacity on the Switch would be advised not to hold their breath. During an interview in November,Monster Hunterproducer Ryozo Tsujimoto shut down rumors ofMonster Hunter Storiesbeing ported on the Switch. However, depending on the success ofMonster Hunter Stories 2, the chance of the original on the Switch may be a consideration from the developers.
