AMinecraftfan has spotted an unusual detail in the recentTrails and Talesupdate, being the cherry sapling’s resemblance to the emblem of perhaps the most iconic video game villain, Bowser. Said sapling was one ofmany assets and features added via the month-oldMinecraftupdate.

Minecrafthas been borderline unstoppable since its initial drop in 2011, with the main game still getting substantial updates over a decade into its life and spawning a full-fledged franchise around it. Such a franchise currently includes several standalone spin-off games, three tabletop games, many official novels, an annualMinecraftconvention since the release year, and even a theatrical film in the works. The latest update further expanded upon the in-game crafting system, granting players the ability to dig up old ruins and adding in new biomes and creatures to interact with.

Reddit user Zandrox_ pointed out a visual oddity from this update, noting how the cherry sapling looks a lot like the head of Bowser, the King of the Koopas andthe primary antagonist of theMariofranchise. His head is most notably utilized as the official emblem of his army, appearing on his castle’s flags and on his equipment in the various spin-offs, and even acting as an iris-out every time Mario loses a life in most of his platformers. The image in the post simply consists of the newMinecraftasset being viewed dead on from one of its corners.

Many in the comments appeared shocked at the revelation too, admitting that they’d never noticed it until it was pointed out to them. Some took the time to poke fun at the discovery by referencing the character, such as by typing out the lyrics to the iconic"Peaches" song fromThe Super Mario Bros. Movie. Others stated that they saw other things in the asset, such as a Sans Blaster fromUndertale, Freddy Fazbear from theFive Nights at Freddy’sseries, or even the emblem for Dry Bowser, an unnerving, skinless version of the Koopa King who debuted in 2006’sNew Super Mario Bros.

More than likely, this visual similarity is purely a coincidence. Even so, it’s always fun to find odd parallels between seemingly unrelated pieces of media. It’s not uncommon these days for developers to hide easter eggs in their products for consumers to find, andMinecraftis no stranger to it, giventhe many promotional crossovers it’s doneover the years. It should be amusing to see whatever other oddities fans can and will discover the more time they spend with theTrials and Talescampaign.

Minecraftis available on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and legacy platforms.
