Magic Legendsaims to put gamers in control of planeswalkers with magical powers through the lens of an action RPG, rather than a collectible card game. This is brand new territory for theMagic: The Gatheringbrand and lots of fans are very excited about the potential to make a planeswalker of their own (outside ofDungeons and Dragons) and act out massive battles against iconicMtGvillains on some of the franchise’s most popular planes.
Like any RPG, taking control of customizing the playable hero and really making them your own is going to be a big part of the immersive experience for many gamers. Cryptic has been clear about the fact that some form of customization will exist since early on, but details have been few and far between. In a recent interview withMagic LegendsExecutive Producer Stephen Ricossa Game Rant had a chance to ask for details about character customization and Ricossa confirmed that players will be able to customize their planeswalker’s skin tone, body type, and clothing or armor.

This comes as great news to fans who were worried that their Mind Mage might always justlook like a Jace carbon copy. It sounds like players will be able to make the characters their own and add some personality to their avatar as they work through the content and unlock additional aesthetic options. It is worth noting that the team was very conscious to go with a ‘body type’ option rather than a more traditional “male or female” option. This should give players the freedom to make their character look however they want them to without feeling like they need to conform to one “male or female” selection.
Game Rant: On the topic of customization, is there a way to customize the way your starting planeswalker looks as far as race, gender, facial features, and things like that?
Stephen Ricossa: Yep, you’ll have a variety of different race options. There will be a variety of race and gender options, though the way we’re doing gender options is by calling it body type and we’re never determining gender for anyone. You can select your body type and determine that you’re male, female, or whichever non-binary choice you have. It was an intentional choice, you’ll never tick a male or female box.
Additionally, Game Rant asked if there might be other, non-human races/creature types that would be playable in the game. The worlds ofMagicare full of interesting creatures, many of which have the potential to become planeswalkers, so it seems to only make sense that playable characters should have the option to be a merfolk, leonin, or one of the world’s other awesome creature types with a spark. Although it sounds like all of the starting options are humans, Ricossa did confirm that there are plans for playable non-human races after launch.
Game Rant: For races, everything we’ve seen so far has been some variation of a tradition human race. Are we going to see any of the other races that exist in Magic, like Loxodon or Leonin for example?
Stephen Ricossa: You will see them eventually, but not at launch.
There is only one remaining launch class left to reveal, so hopefully the team at Cryptic is ready to offer a look at what the Black-mana planeswalker class has to offer in the very near future. Until then, be sure to check back for moreMagic Legendsnews, updates, and features.
