It has been two weeks since Lil Nas X’s new video for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” released and it has caused quite a commotion ever since. The video has gained a lot of attention for the way it mixes religious imagery with twerking. Because of how popular the video has become, it was only a matter of time beforesomeone made a rendition of this iconic songinAnimal Crossing: New Horizons.
Even thoughAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsseems like a happy-go-lucky type of simulation game, it has allowed players to get creative and replicate content that might not be just for kids. There has definitely been a good amount of people recreating children’s content, but there is more than that as well. A good example is all of theAnimal CrossingxDoom Eternalmemes that emerged in the early days of the quarantine when both games were first released.

AlthoughtheAnimal Crossingrecreationof “Call Me By Your Name” is not a frame-by-frame replica, it does a very good job synthesizing some of the main parts of the original video. The 35-second clip was uploaded originally by user alexiathegreat56 on TikTok and then shared by Lil Nas X to his Twitter account. So far, it has earned over 100 thousand likes and more than 16 thousand retweets. Although the subtweets are pretty divided because of how controversial the video has become, there is a good amount of supportive reactions, including one from Twitch.
TheAnimal Crossingversion of “Montero” starts off by showing a character in front of a computer getting a customized outfit which turns out to beLil Nas X’s demon outfitfrom his video. The outfit comes with the red hair and horns Lil Nas wears at the end of “Call Me By Your Name.” Then we see sequences that closely resemble the music video, such as the Lil Nas lookalike dancing in front of a villager, or smelling some flowers.
Even though the video is pretty short, it does a really good job at encapsulating the main aspects of “Montero.” Particularly, the scene in the original video in which Lil Nas is pole dancing in hell gained a lot of attention and it was briefly rescued intheAnimal Crossingreplicaby just showing Lil Nas’s character posing in front of what seems to be a light pole. As if that was not enough, there is a villager right behind him playing the part of the devil to complete the scene. Even though theAnimal Crossingvideo is definitely PG-13, it is not surprising that it received a bit of a backlash. Thankfully, for the most part, fans seem to appreciate the video.
