Jason Momoa speaks out on what his future in James Gunn’s DCU entails, and whether audiences can expect more of his Aquaman in light of recent rumors of a DCU reboot and teases of Lobo by Gunn. Momoa released a video, presumably taken after a WBD meeting, expressing excitement for the upcoming DCU, which left fans uncertain about the future for his version of Aquaman.
It was reported thatJames Gunn had canceledWonder Woman 3, which was revealed around the same time as Gunn’s public announcement confirming that the studio would be going separate ways from Henry Cavill’s Superman. However, Gunn also stated that there would be returning actors in the upcoming DCU, like the possibility of Ezra Miller’s Flash and thePeacemakercast, seeing as how a second season of the show was presumably confirmed, and that the director would even pull in actors he previously worked with at Marvel. As a result of all the shifting tides under Gunn, some fans were quick to assume that Momoa’s recent excitement came at the expense ofAquaman, as the actor was supposedly offered to play a new role as another character, and although there is still speculation, those assumptions seem to have been put to rest.

During an interview for his role inDeep Rising, a documentary that sheds light on organizations that extract metals from the seafloor,Momoa tells Varietythat he will “always be Aquaman.” The actor goes on to recount a recent meeting with WBD and that “they are liking a lot of stuff” he is doing, which is likely in regard to the firstAquamanfilm that made $1 billion at the box office, and theJames WanAquamansequel on the horizon. While Momoa did not confirm the Lobo rumors, he did say that “there might be other characters” for him to play in the DCU.
Momoa describes the SundanceDeep Risingdocumentary as being similar in theme tothe upcomingAquaman and The Lost Kingdomfilm, which was supposed to release in 2022 but was pushed back to 2023. From what Momoa has described, the story is teased to revolve around the threat of climate change instead of an outside antagonistic force, which seems fitting and refreshing for anAquamanfilm. “There’s no far off galaxy coming to destroy us or aliens from another place. It’s us ruining our planet. We need to get it together and save our home.”
From what can be gathered, it may not be a stretch to suggest that Momoa will continue as Aquaman in the upcoming DCU while also being cast as Lobo. This could work with a certain amount of makeup and computer generated effects to separate the actor from competing roles in the same franchise, asMomoa certainly fits the look of Lobo, and at the same time proving to be a refreshing take on Aquaman envisioned by director Zack Snyder when he originally cast the actor for hisJustice League.
