It’s no secret that James Gunn is working on a number of potential DC projects after his acclaimed work onThe Suicide SquadandPeacemaker. Now, Gunn may have hinted at a future project with Peter Capaldi, who played The Thinker inThe Suicide Squad.
The Suicide Squadintroduced several newcomers to the DCEU, including Capaldi’s The Thinker. While the film didn’t fare as well as expected at the box office, the critical success prompted Warner Bros. to enlist Gunn to develop more DC projects for them.

“I can’t wait to tell you all the big plans we have in play…” Gunn tweeted cryptically, with a screenshot of Capaldi’s Thinker fromThe Suicide Squad. Capaldi is seen in his familiar Thinker headwear, standing inside a bloody and grotesque laboratory. However, Capaldi’s character died in the 2021 film, causing fans to question what kind of project this could be. Some replies to Gunn’s tweet suggest this may be a prequel film or series, which would show how Dr. Gaius Grieves came to be the Thinker. Other fans theorize that Thinker may have learned how to clone himself while working on Project Starfish or other previous tasks for General Presidente Luna.
While Gunn has not released any other details about the context of the photo, he has previously confirmed that he willreturn for future DC projects. “There are presently no characters at either Marvel or DC that I want to be working with right now that I am not,” he tweeted back in April. While his wording was “obtuse or linguistically Olympian,” he clarified that he is already currently working on new DC projects that have yet to be announced. While Gunn has yet to clarify what the screenshot of Capaldi’s Thinker means, the photo does seem to suggest he will return for some sort of DC project in, what seems to be, the near future.
Outside his current work at DC, Gunn wrapped production on his final film for his Marvel Studios trilogyGuardians of the Galaxyback in May. The day after shooting had finished, Gunn shared via Twitter that it “took everything in me not to break down sobbing on the spot,” along with a photo of the final slate for the final shot. WhileGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is scheduled to hit theaters on July 20, 2025, it seems as though Gunn is filling that time with some DC projects he has been looking forward to.
The Suicide Squadis now available on HBO Max.
