After a long wait and the release of a lot of promotional content, James Gunn’sPeacemakerfinally premiered onHBO Maxlast week. While the first four episodes led to a lot of discussions on social media, one thing that stood out was the opening credits, which fans were truly amused by, and Gunn has explained how they came to life.

Fans who have seen the first fourepisodes ofPeacemaker, which premiered onHBO Maxon January 13, will know that the opening sequence includes the entire cast dancing robotically to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It.” Throughout the dance, they maintain serious expressions, which fits in with the absurd themes of the series itself. Previously, Gunn had said that the purpose of the song was to “subvert expectations,” but he has now explained how it was always a part of the script.

“I wrote it into the script, it was always there,” revealed Gunn in an interview with HBO Max, shared by @DCComics on Twitter. He knew early on that he wanted the dance sequence to be a part of the series and even finalized the song as part of the script. “The idea was that it would be this incredibly eccentric dance, with everyone looking incredibly serious,” he said.

For the sequence, Gunn hired the choreographer and actor Charissa Barton, who happens to be married toactor Alan Tudyk. At the time of bringing her on board, Gunn wasn’t aware of her relationship status and thought it was “crazy” when he found out. The hilarious bit was that the performance was prepared during the ongoing pandemic, and as Barton worked from home, she would get her husband to perform the dance “in their living room,” record clips of it, and then send them to Gunn.

“I have clips of Alan doingthe entirePeacemakerdance,” Gunn revealed and had a good laugh about. As the videos came in, Gunn would either approve of the specific choreographed step, or ask for something different. “That’s how it came to be,” he said. Tudyk has been very supportive of his wife and promoting the series on his personal Twitter account, and Gunn says he “is a part of it.”
