Immortals of Aveum Could Pave the Way for a Doctor Strange Game
Despite being Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme for 60 years, Doctor Strange has never really received his own video game adaptation, at least not in the same vein as Spider-Man or the X-Men. Instead, Doctor Strange has only ever appeared as a secondary playable character. One of Doctor Strange’s most iconic video game appearances comes fromtheMarvel Ultimate Allianceseries, where he’s a playable character in both the first and third games in the series, with plenty of character-specific abilities that really show off his unique style of combat. The most recent playable appearance of Doctor Strange in a video game wasMarvel’s Midnight Suns, which again showcased his flashy magical abilities.
While Doctor Strange has never been the most popular Marvel character, his popularity has grown exponentially over the last seven years or so, with his multiple appearances in the MCU making him a household name. And thoughthe last Doctor Strange movie was a bit of a mixed bagfor many, it seemingly hasn’t affected the character’s overall popularity. With future appearances in the MCU likely, Doctor Strange is only going to continue to grow in popularity, making it the perfect time for a Doctor Strange-focused video game, one thatImmortals of Aveumcould lay the groundwork for.
Doctor Strange’s combat stylein both the comics and the MCU tends to use a lot of flashy visuals, ranging from intricate hand movements to glowing projections to some more unconventional visuals like a trippy mirror dimension that’s in constant flux. But by far the most common type of magical combat seen in use by Doctor Strange are magical whips and bolts of energy, all of which tend to be brightly colored and translucent.
From the trailers released so far, it seems as thoughImmortals of Aveumis essentially borrowing a lot of this imagery for its own combat. During the trailers, players see a vast array of different spells used inImmortals of Aveum’s combat, ranging from simple casts that just look like magical versions of a machine gun spray or a shotgun spread, to magical whips that pull enemies off ledges, to shields that appear in the form of projected runic symbols in front of the player. All ofImmortals of Aveum’s spells look as though they’ve been ripped right out of the pages of a Doctor Strange comic, and it’s exactly this gameplay style that could go on to inspire a future Doctor Strange video game.
Immortals of Aveumwill be released August 22 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
