Sonic the Hedgehogis one of gaming’s most recognizable franchises, so making a Lego set of it seems like a pretty easy decision. It seems that set is getting much closer to release, as first images of the officialSonic the HedgehogLego set have leaked.

Earlier this year, aSonic the HedgehogLego set was greenlitby the massive toy company through its Lego Ideas program. In this community, Lego builders from around the world can submit their creations—from brand tie-ins to custom models—to Lego Ideas, where other members can vote and show their support for the set ideas they like. Sets that reach 10,000 votes move on to a review phrase where Lego itself assesses whether it wants to make the set, potentially turning what was just an idea into a full-on product. Many other game pitches have gone through the Lego Ideas system to varying degrees of success, likeFall GuysandThe Legend of Zelda.

An image of the LegoSonic the Hedgehogset is here, giving fans a first-look at what the model will entail. NazoTheVengefulOne shared the image to the officialSonicsubreddit, and right away, it is clear that Lego abandoned theSonic Maniatheme of the original pitch; the Hard-Boiled Heavies and the Death Egg Robot are no longer present in this new design.What remains is a clean depiction of Green Hill Zone, including a bridge with a Crabmeat robot, an iconic loop, a Motobug on a platform floating above it, Invincibility and Speed Shoes item boxes, and many other details. The most jarring detail of the set is probably Dr. Robotnik in his hovercraft, who’s face looks a little strange due to the layering pieces.

While this is the first officialSonic the HedgehogLego set, the character has been around as an official Lego figure for many years now.Sonic the Hedgehogappeared inLego Dimensions, the 2015 toys-to-life game, as a purchaseable character pack, receiving his own campaign and levels. Like how the Flash inLego Batmanor Quicksilver inLego Marvel Super Heroesare faster than regular characters, Sonic was one of the fastest playable characters inLego Dimensions. Minifigures of many other Sonic characters appeared during his campaign including Tails the Fox, Knuckles the Echidna, and of course, Big the Cat.

It is awesome to see Lego and Sega finally producing an officialSonicset after having the opportunity to do so for years. Nintendo in the last year has been pushing hard with LegoMarioproducts, like theLegoSuper Mario 64Item Block set, or the “playable"Super Mario Bros.NES set. One can’t forget to mention that massive line of electronic LegoMariosets, where players can build their own courses and have Mario react to them. It is unlikely that Sega will get the same sort of deal with Lego, but having an officialSonic the Hedgehogset is pretty incredible nonetheless.
