Aloy’s arsenal is ever expanding as players progress throughHorizon: Zero Dawn, but one constant is her trusty spear, the game’s primary melee weapon. While players can attach modifications and use different elemental ammunition for all of her other weapons, it first appeared that Aloy’s spear wouldn’t be customizable. However, with the introduction of theFrozen Wildsexpansion, bolstering your melee weapon became a reality.
Essentially, there are three ways in which Aloy’s spear can be improved, with each method providing a different boon for the weapon. So, if players are diving back into the gamenow that it has a remastered versionand are looking to assemble the most devastating melee output possible, a knowledge ofhow to upgrade Aloy’s spear inHorizon: Zero Dawnwill surely make this possible.

How To Upgrade Aloy’s Spear In Horizon: Zero Dawn
There are three missions withinHorizon: Zero Dawn’s main story andFrozen Wildsexpansionthat will improve Aloy’s Spear in some way. One of them is a side quest relatively early in the story, another requires completing an errand in the expansion, and the final one requires Aloy to complete one of the story’s final missions. The three missions you need to complete are:
How To Complete In Her Mother’s Footsteps
The first mission you’ll want to complete to upgrade your spear is In Her Mother’s Footsteps, which is a very early side quest you can complete. This can be triggered by speaking to Thok, who can be found laying on the ground, injured, justsouth of Mother’s Heart. He asks Aloy for help as his daughter has gone after a machine that has her mother’s spear.
From the starting point, players will need to use Aloy’s Focus to track Arana, the daughter, which will lead you across the river and into a group of Watchers. You can approach this quietly or not-so-quietly, but once you have dispatched the Watchers, you will speak with Arana, who mentions she unsuccessfully tracked the Scrapper that has her mother’s spear.

Once the dialogue is completed, Arana will return to her father and Aloy will need to use her Focus again to track her footsteps, then the tracks of the Scrapper. Once you encounter it, you can decide to take it down quietly to avoid alerting the other machines, or deal with the whole group. Once the Scrapper is destroyed, loot it for the spear and return it to Thok. As a reward, you’ll receive a damage boost for Aloy’s spear.
How To Complete A Secret Shared
If players have purchased theFrozen Wildsexpansion or the complete edition ofHorizon: Zero Dawn, they will have access to the A Secret Shared mission, which can be found shortly after arriving at Song’s Edge. To trigger this quest, players will need to leave the settlement and speak to Kamut, a Banuk shaman, who will compliment Aloy for her spear and mention that it could be improved. To do so, she’ll need to acquire a Rail Part from a cave in the north.
Once players have spoken to Kamut, they will need to venture all the way to the very north of the map to an aircraft hangar. Once there, you will need to follow a few basic steps to get the part.

Once you have the part, climb over the half-closed door and deal with the Demonic Stalker that ambushes Aloy. Once that is dealt with, players can fast-travelback to Song’s Edge, and speak to Kamut again. The shaman will make the necessary modifications and provide you with a modification coil, which you’re able to add to the spear to improve it.
How To Add Another Modification Slot for Aloy’s Spear
While the Secret Shared mission only allows Aloy to add one modification to her spear, it is possible to add a second one. This will require completing themain story mission The Mountain That Fell, which will grant Aloy with a new melee weapon as a reward. This spear is an improvement on Aloy’s original, and will grant an additional modification slot, so Aloy can add an additional boon to her close-quarter combat tool.
With these three upgrades made, Aloy’s spear will then have a significant boost in damage, as well as the ability to add elemental boosts to the weapon as players see fit. It is handy to have more than one of these handy as a backup, so you can adjust your loadout to suit the weaknesses of some of the tougher machines inHorizon: Zero Dawn.
