AHarry Potterfan playingHogwarts Legacyhas put together a surprising analysis determining whether the game’s neckties are correct. To say that there are some dedicatedHarry Potterfans would be quite an understatement. These fans would notice an incorrect detail inHogwarts Legacyinstantly. There are probably even several such fans working at Avalanche Software to ensureHogwarts Legacyis incredibly accurate to theHarry Potterbooks. But necktie design isn’t necessarily aHarry Potter-specific issue.
InHogwarts Legacy, players take on the role of a student at theHogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hogwarts is located somewhere within the country of Scotland, though its specific location is intentionally unclear. Nevertheless, the students at Hogwarts wear uniforms that are similar in nature to private schools. More specifically, due to the house-based social structure of Hogwarts, it takes inspiration from the United Kingdom’s Victorian period of private school culture, though it remains common even now.

Hogwarts Legacyplayer CaptainRumBelly, who notes that they’ve chosenSlytherin as their Hogwarts house, has provided a thorough analysis of the game’s neckties and alleges that they are in fact incorrectly presented. The stripes onHogwarts Legacy’s ties, more appropriately named repp-stripe ties, aren’t aligned correctly. There are two issues in total. One, the stripes on the lower part of the tie point upward towards the right shoulder instead of the left, toward the heart. Secondly, the upper part of the tie is aligned with the bottom part instead of going in the opposite direction.
CaptainRumBelly says both of these design choices for the neckties are incorrect. They’re more akin to what they describe as American-style repp-stripe ties and not the United Kingdom or Europe. That perhaps implies thatdeveloper Avalanche Softwaretook influence from the wrong region for the repp ties inHogwarts Legacy.
It’s unclear if repp tie design is ever mentioned in theHarry Potterbooks, but CaptainRumBelly does mention that the ties are correct in theHarry Pottermovies. It’s interesting to consider that Avalanche Software may not have used the movies as source material forHogwarts Legacy. Of course, the repp ties may just have been too small of a detail to notice.
Luckily,Hogwarts Legacydidn’t mess up the entire game with incorrect rep-striped ties. AnotherHogwarts Legacyplayer mentions that many Hogwarts students in the game do at least have the correct stripe orientation on the bottom half of the tie. They mention “prefect shirts and vests, tattersall shirts, the autumn jumpers, and all the diamond uniforms except the Gryffindor classic” being correct. ForHarry Potterfans who must remain true to the lore, there appear to be options.
Hogwarts Legacyis available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
