The newly announcedGuardians of the Galaxyis a single-player game with an emphasis on story and action. After the mixed reactions toMarvel’s Avengers, this approach might be the best move. Focusing on a single-player experience could giveGuardians of the Galaxyan edge overAvengers, which was built as a multiplayer experience from the ground up and missed a few steps in the eyes of many players. As a result, it’s likely that fans are tempering expectations aboutGuardians of the Galaxy,but that might give it a strong underdog vibe.
TheGuardians of the Galaxygame was announced todayduring Square Enix’s E3 showcase. A lengthy gameplay and story trailer showed off Eidos Montreal’s new take on the ragtag group of cosmic mercenaries that had gained new popularity after the success of the two Marvel Studios movies. While the Guardians have seen many different rosters throughout the years, the new game looks to focus on the same group as the movies: Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. However, players will be controlling Star-Lord exclusively. This more singular focus could help refine the experience in a way whereAvengersdropped the ball to some players.

Guardians of the Galaxy is Looking More Focused Than Marvel’s Avengers
Part of the problems withMarvel’s Avengerswas an attempt to capture so many characters at once. The overall experience felt watered down for many as vastly different characters were placed into the same gameplay style, especially because of its live-service elements.
Confirming thatGuardians of the Galaxyisn’t a live service titlealso means that the game won’t automatically spurn certain players that avoid live service titles out of principle.Guardiansof the Galaxy’s focus on the single-player experience might be just what fans are looking for afterAvengers. The success of other properties that focus on a narrative-driven adventure likeJedi: Fallen Orderis evidence enough that a large bulk of players still want single-player games.
Square Enix is certainly aware of thestate of itsAvengerstitle, and by the looks of it, the company is still dedicated to making the most out of Avengers. Many do want to see it become the best version of itself it can be, but it doesn’t hurt to appeal to players spurned by that or who liked its campaign, if not its endgame. Nonetheless, after the missed steps ofAvengers,the publisher is likely looking to regain a certain amount of trust from Marvel fans. And focusing its next Marvel game around its narrative might be just the right thing to do.
Fans online are already getting excited aboutGuardians of the Galaxynow that it’s officially on the way, although some are expressing concern for its graphics and gameplay. Obviously, time will tell if the execution ofGuardians of the Galaxyends up being enough to make up forAvengersin many fans' eyes. But based on the first look at the gameplay and story that was shown off today,Guardians of the Galaxylooks like a promising new adventure that adventure game and Marvel fans alike could easily get excited about. Hopefully, the game becomes what Square Enix needs afterMarvel’s Avengers.
