Summary
According to data gleaned from Version 4.8,Genshin Impactis adding a new type of character cosmetics that players will be able to unlock through the Imaginarium Theater. Though Version 4.8 is also adding new outfits for Kirara and Nilou, the upcomingGenshin Impactupdate is expanding the rewards for the Imaginarium Theater in a big way. Whereas Version 4.7 is the debut of the Imaginarium Theater as an alternative to the Spiral Abyss, players can currently only purchase custom Photo Mode poses for certainGenshin Impactcharacters.
While this is a great way for HoYoverse to inject the game with more customization options, it would seem that the developers have a more ambitious vision for theImaginarium Theater rewards inGenshin Impact. Diluc remains the only character to date with a 5-Star skin, and what makes it stand out compared to the 4-Star skins of other characters is that it comes with new animations and voice lines. Given that there has been no 5-Star skin released since Version 2.8, it’s highly likely that HoYoverse pivoted in a different direction.

This new direction seems to be Trail Appearances forGenshin Impactcharacters, a new type of cosmetic that players can purchase for Imaginarium Theater keys starting in Version 4.8. The information was relayed to the community bySeele Leaks, who claims that the first batch of characters to receive this cosmetic will be Diluc, Kirara, Ningguang, Qiqi, and Jean. Specifically, the special effects will be displayed whenever a character is moving. There is currently no data on what the visual effects look like or how elaborate they will be.
Genshin Impact Characters That Get a Trail Appearance in Version 4.8
Though players were initially skeptical abouthow the Imaginarium Theater would fitGenshin Impactand its endgame, it would seem that HoYoverse is intending to use it as an avenue to add secondary customization options to characters without having to release alternate outfits. The new Trail Appearance can be obtained by spending two Trail Keys, which unlocks a special challenge stage for each specific character. Undertaking the Pictorial Trails requires the character to be Level 90 and have at least Rank 8 in Friendship. Completing the challenge stage unlocks the option to change the Trail Appearance via the character screen.
It remains to be seen how often HoYoverse will update the list of Photo Mode poses and Trail Appearances, and whether it will focus onnew Natlan charactersor old ones such as Eula and Hu Tao. Version 4.8 will be the last patch of the Fontaine cycle, which will likely be remembered for adding numerous quality-of-life features toGenshin Impact.
