Summary
AFallout 76leak has hinted that a revamped companion system is coming to the game in a future patch. Companion characters have had a key role in theFalloutfranchise, and they may be coming toFallout 76in an upcoming update.
Since the firstFalloutgame was released, the series has included unique characters that would aid players in their adventures. These range from Ian, Katja, and Tycho in the first game up to Nick Valentine, Piper Wright, and theAutomatron inFallout 4. Beyond helping in combat, these characters often provide unique dialogue that gives them their own unique personalities.Fallout 76was released without NPCs that were later added in the Wastelanders update, which was widely praised by the community. Taking things a step further, Bethesda may be preparing to add companions to the live service title in its effort to continue improving on its foundations.
Windows Centralhas reported that a dataminer in theFallout 76community has located evidence that a companion system is coming to the game. Bethesda first teased a companion pet systemforFallout 76in its 2021 roadmap, but the subject has mostly been dormant since. According to the dataminer, the game’s code has evidence of a multi-stage tutorial for the new companion system. There are pet-themed icons for the tutorial which may suggest that the first companions a player may acquire are a cat or a dog. One image indicates that players may give orders to their companion to wait or follow companions, akin to earlier mainline titles.
How Could the Fallout 76 Companion System Work?
If pastFallouttitles are anything to go by, this revamped companion system may result in more than just the initial datamined pets. Dogmeat is a long-standing companion in the series, but each game has humanoid NPCs that can also be recruited. Because none of these characters have been datamined yet, the community can only speculate on existingFallout 76NPCsthat could make great followers. It’s also unclear if these characters will add anything to the story through responses to a player’s chosen dialogue. Beyond the companion pets hinted at by this dataminer, the code also indicates that four-star Legendaries will be part of the same update.
As the datamined code is likely from the Public Test Server build, it could be many months before the companions are added to the live client. With Bethesda continuing to updateFallout 76regularly, the companions that launch with the system may just be the beginning as more could be added in future patches.
