As a franchise,Fallouthas been inspired by theMad Maxmovies since the beginning, and aFallout 4player settlement represents this inspiration coming full circle. ThoughMad Maxreleased a video game adaptationin 2015, theFalloutgames have often been the home to manyMad Maxfans in need of a post-apocalyptic experience. Whereas George Miller’s masterpiece tackled the Australian wasteland,Falloutprovides players the chance to play out their Road Warrior fantasies with an Americana twist.
Much likeMad Maxis irrevocably tied to Australia,Falloutgames deal with explicitly American themes, makingtotal conversion mods such as Fallout Londonstand out in an interesting way. While it’s very likely thatFallout 5will continue to explore those themes, there is still plenty of common ground between the post-apocalyptic worlds of the two franchises. One of the key features added inFallout 4are settlements, allowing players to construct their perfect base of operations from scraps gathered throughout the irradiated wilderness of the Commonwealth. Thanks to the use ofmods that expand onFallout 4’s settlements, a player named sirbalz was able to create an incredible town inspired by theMad Maxfranchise, with many comments noting its similarities with Bartertown in particular.
The effort took sirbalz roughly ten to fifteen hours to complete, and hisFallout 4settlement manages to capture several visual themes from allMad Maxmovies, be itFury RoadorBeyond Thunderdome. While this is certainly helped byFalloutinherently taking inspiration from George Miller’s work, sirbalz still managed to arrange those building blocks to perfection. WhereasFallout 76lends itself well when it comes to smaller-scale builds,Fallout 4truly shines in creating genuine settlements and outposts to house the game’s NPCs – in this case, the raiders of Nuka World.
In addition to experiencing a sci-fi take withStarfieldin September, fans can look forward to seeing the world ofFalloutadapted as a live action seriesby critically-acclaimed showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, slated for a release in early 2024 on Amazon Prime Video. From a visual perspective, it will be interesting to see distinctlyFalloutconcepts such as power armor, Mister Handy, and rampant American commercialism presented in live action, as the result will hopefully not only bridge the gap betweenMad MaxandFallout, but also draw a line that separates the two franchises with even greater clarity.
Fallout 4is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in 2023.
