Once Beth gets home, she discovers Ellie’s husband has left and they are getting evicted in a month. As if that isn’t enough, Ellie gets possessed after her son, Danny, discovers an ancient book in the basement. Can Beth help recover her sister’s sanity while protecting her nieces and nephew inEvil Dead Rise? Let’s go through some plot points in this spoiler-filled breakdown.

Warning! Spoilers ahead.

6What Will Happen With Beth And Kassie?

Kassie is a forgone conclusion at this point first and foremost. It is a miracle the movie doesn’t end with her in a catatonic state. She witnessed her mom, brother, and sister become demons. Kassie even impaled her sister with a sharpened stick. She saw other people reanimate from thedead like zombiesas well not to mention Kassie got covered in blood via an elevator.

Expensive therapy bills aside for Kassie aside, there is also Beth. The two of them walk out of the apartment covered in blood and with a chainsaw in hand. If a cop saw that, they would arrest Beth on the spot. If they investigate the building then they would 100% lock Beth away and put Kassie in a foster home if the dad is MIA. If this film does get a sequel, it will be interesting to see how it addresses this ending.

5What Happened At The Cabin?

Then there is the cabin which is also like the start of a sequel toEvil Dead Rise. It’s how the movie opens which is a strong callback to the series overall. There arethe Sam Raimi-inspiredtracking shots through the forest followed by the setting of the cabin. Here, Teresa gets her scalp ripped off by her cousin, Jessica, who also rips off her boyfriend’s head, Caleb.

After that mutation happens, Jessica rises out of the water of the lake. She does not get taken out by Teresa or anyone else before time rewinds to a day prior with Beth. This means that Jessica is still out there, waiting for some unsuspecting fools to come to this cabin like in classicEvil Deadmovies or even Friday the 13th.

4Why Was The Book In The Vault?

Ellie tells her sister Beth that she has to move out of the apartment. In a month the building is getting demolished. There is no reason given as to why this is happening other than the building is old. Upon coming back to the apartment with pizza, Danny and his sisters see a hole open up in the basement garage via an earthquake.

This leads Danny to explore this new hole wherein he discovers a vault. Inside one of the private boxes, hediscovers the Necronomicon, or the Book of the Dead as it is sometimes referred to. Who put the Necronomicon there and for what reason? Did the owner? Did the priest cult? It’s such a random place for such a destructive relic.

3Was Anyone Else In The Building?

At first, it seems like there are only residents in this apartment building on the top floor where Ellie and her family live. There are also two kids that come over to ask Bridget out, a buff-looking guy named Gabriel, and old man Fonda. Throughout the movie, it’s a mystery if anyone living below the top floor is experiencingany paranormal activity.

Then, the final scene shows the next day wherein Jessica leaves her apartment in preparation to go to the cabin. This ties everything back together on how Jessica gets possessed by the demons in the first place. The question here then is this. Was Jessica the only other tenant in the building or are there others thatcould get possessedas well? This could lead to many sequels forEvil Dead Rise.

2How Does The Curse Spread?

One of the biggest mysteries that does not get addressed in this movie franchise is how the curse spreads. Curses rarely get explainedin horror movies. It’s not like a bite akin to a zombie movie, although that may appear this way. For example, inEvil Dead Rise, Ellie pricks Bridget with a tattoo needle. This scratch leads to Bridget getting possessed in a scene that shows the cut cracking and taking over her body.

Beth and Kassie get injured by possessed people as well such as in the scene where Beth gets brutally scraped by a cheese grater. However, the two of them do not get possessed even though they sustain damage. There are other examples in this sequel/reboot to point out but it remains a big mystery how they are safe and how the curse spreads. Are they actually safe or was the ending used to create a false sense of hope for the audience?

1Is That Cat Okay?

Here is something fun and silly to point out inEvil Dead Rise. Is Mr. Fonda’s cat okay? Earlier in the movie they set up that his cat sometimes likes to crawl in the vents. This cat does not show up until the last half of the movie and gives the possessed version of Ellie the idea to sneak back into the apartment via the vents. It’s not known if Ellie found this cat and destroyed it on her way back in.

The cat doesn’t make a brutal death knell before this, so hopefully this fluffy beast is okay. Whenever apet appears in a horror movie, it’s safe to bet that that pet will die brutally. Another recent horror movie, Smile, kills a cat in a traumatizing way for kids.
