One of the most memorable things about any fantasy story is the characters, and that often rings especially true for games that feature companion characters with whom players interact and develop personal relationships. Obsidian Entertainment’sAvowedis already set up to be a similar experience, as several companion characters have already been confirmed for the game. As inObsidian’s past games, likeThe Outer Worlds, each ofAvowed’s companions has a distinct personality that reveals itself in their dialogue and behavior throughout the game.
While there may be more, four ofAvowed’s companions have been revealed so far. Giatta, Kai, Marius, and Yatzli each contribute something unique to the party, to the point that they are likely to encourage players onto entirely different paths than they might have originally intended. In fact, each ofAvowed’s companions seems to have a personal take on the Dreamscourge pestilence that seemingly lies at the heart of its conflict. As such, these companions will likely be an integral part of the player’s journey throughout the Living Lands.
Avowed’s Four Confirmed Companions
Giatta Is a Human Animancer With a Tragic Backstory
Along with Kai, Giatta has been at the forefront ofAvowed’s marketing ahead of its release. Giatta is a human companion who comes from a long line of animancers. Unfortunately, her tragic backstory has left her scarred for life, as it involved the death of her parents in a lab accident. Nevertheless, this has fueled her mission to complete their research, and this is likely why she seesAvowed’s Dreamscourge as a sort of blessing meant to be embraced rather than despised.
Kai Is a Coastal Aumaua and Former Naval Soldier
Kai is one of the most recognizablecompanions fromAvowedso far, as he has appeared in almost all the game’s promotional material up to this point. Kai is a laid-back, pragmatic coastal aumaua who is very skilled in battle. He wears light armor to maintain his speed and combat. While he is a fierce fighter, however, he is noted as being the one players are “most likely to have a beer with.” As such, players can expect Kai to remain calm and collected even in the face of danger.
Yatzli Is an Orlan Wizard With a Feisty and Fun Side
Yatzli is presumably going to beAvowed’s most entertaining companion, as she has already shown herself to be an orlan with a feisty and flirtatious side. As a scholar of the godless, Yatzli has dedicated her life to the study of ancient people who didn’t align themselves with any of the gods ofAvowed’s world of Eora. She is also a skilled wizard who has been practicing magic for her entire life, so she’s likely to be a great help in battle. Finally, Yatzli typically prefers to hang around the ruins in the Living Lands, as that is where she does most of her research.
Marius Is a Dwarven Hunter With a Knack for Survival
Of all the companions revealed forAvowedso far, Marius is the most mysterious, simply because he hasn’t been featured in anything as much as the others. Marius is a Pargrun dwarf from Solace, an isolated keep inthe Living Lands' Galawain’s Tusks region. As Galawain’s Tusks is one of the harshest and most uninhabitable regions in the Living Lands, Marius has had to work hard to survive all of his life. However, this worked out to his benefit and will likely be an advantage to players inAvowed, as it made him into the skilled hunter and survival expert that he is today.
It’s unclear whetherAvowedwill feature more companions, but it is likely, given Obsidian’s history. Even if Giatta, Kai, Yatzli, and Marius are the only four, their distinct personalities are already boding well for players' journey throughPillars of Eternity’s Living LandswhenAvowedlaunches later this year.
