“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is credited to Adassa Beatriz, Maruo Castillo, Rhenzy Feliz, Carolina Gaitán, Dianne Guerrero, and the cast ofEncanto. It joins a shortlist of other animated Disney tracks that have cracked Billboard’s top 5. The list includes Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle’s “A Whole New World” from theAladdinsoundtrack, which reached No. 1 in 1993, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight"fromThe Lion King(reached No. 4 in 1994), and “Colors of the Wind” fromPocahontas(reached No. 4 in 1995).
Encanto’s hit tune documents a pivotal revelation in the film. As the only member of her family without a magical gift, Mirabel embarks on a journey to save the family’s home and magic. Mirabel quickly discovers a shattered vision left behind by her Uncle Bruno, who has not been seen by the family in a number of years. As her family becomes aware of Mirabel’s investigation into Bruno, they warn her not to mention his name and describe the horrific events that led to his sudden disappearance in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
Despite its success, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” itself will not be eligible for an Academy Award, as Disney has submitted “Dos Oruguitas” from the soundtrack instead. However,Encantostill has a chance of adding to its list of accolades at the Academy Awards. With its Golden Globe win,Encantocould be on track tofollow in the path ofSoul, which earned two Academy Awards in 2021, including Best Animated Feature.
