Ed Boon is askingMortal Kombatfans what past game modes they would like to see return in the upcomingMortal Kombat 12. TheMortal Kombatco-creator has often engaged with fans on social media, sharing interesting stories behind the creation of NetherRealm’s beloved fighting game franchise and playfully teasing about what his studio might be working on next. That new project was seemingly revealed during a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call in February, when a high-ranking executive let it slip that NetherRealm is developing the often-rumoredMortal Kombat 12. Ed Boon himself had an amusing reaction to this on social media, and fans have since been scouring the internet looking for clues aboutwhenMortal Kombat 12could be released. So far,Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance’s Konquest Mode is the leading option in Boon’s recent Twitter poll, followed bytheMario Kart-style Motor KombatfromMortal Kombat Armageddon, the board game-like Chess Kombat fromMortal Kombat: Deception, and theTetris-based Puzzle Kombat fromMortal Kombat: Deception.
Konquest Mode leading this poll is interesting, as this isn’t the first time that Ed Boon has suggested thatMortal Kombat 12bring the popular single-player feature back. First introduced in 2002’sMortal Kombat:Deadly Alliance, Konquest was initially a series of standalone missions that let players practice withMortal Kombat’s roster of fighters. It would be greatly expanded on inMortal Kombat: Deception, where it became an RPG-like adventure starring a brand-new character named Shujinko. Konquest Mode would return one last time inMortal Kombat: Armageddon, now taking on an adventure game format and putting players in the role of yet another new character named Taven.
While neither Konquest Mode nor any of the other zany options Ed Boon included in his recent poll have returned in NetherRealm’s rebootedMortal Kombatseries, the studio has always prided itself on giving players plenty of variety in bothMKandthe DC Comics-basedInjusticeseries. Seeing an alternate single-player mode like Konquest, Chess Kombat, or Puzzle Kombat would certainly be a fun treat for longtime fans while ensuring that newer players keep booting upMortal Kombat 12after it supposedly launches sometime this year.
