Doom Eternalhad a highly anticipated launch last year, both as a follow-up to id Software’s popularDoom(2016) and becauseDoom EternalandAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsreleased simultaneously. However, the game has remained popular ever since among its fans, which can be seen via the efforts of one artist who created an animated, 3D box cover forDoom Eternalon PS4.
This augmented reality-based artwork was shared by Reddit user Dion42o, who has become known for a number of projects using a similar concept this month. They began posting ananimated box art cover for PS5’sDemon’s Soulson April 16, followed by a piece based on PS4’sGod of War(2018) on April 23. To create them, Dion42o previously said they layered 3D and 2D images onto the cover using After Effects and Photoshop before filming its movement using a camera that can capture 3D effects.

TheDoom Eternalcover uploaded to r/playstation today achieves a similar level of quality, showing protagonist Doomguy kick a demon in the foreground while the hellish setting behind him goes far into the background as the PS4 box moves back-and-forth. Some additional effects like embers and other particles rising up from the surrounding flames, as well as a glowing red axe near the studio logos in the bottom-right corner help bring everything to life with constant animation.
In the r/playstation post for their previous endeavor based onGod of War, Dion42o told one commenter suggesting they try this on the cover forPS4’sFinal Fantasy 7 Remakethat they might go back and try it one day. However, in the comments of theDoom Eternalpost they provide a link to a time-lapse video of their process that lets fans know this will likely be “my last one of these for a bit.” The Redditor thanks everyone who enjoyed the animated covers for their support.
It’s likely fan content based onDoom Eternalwill continue to crop up for some time. A few DLC additions have been released for the first-person shooter since it launched last March, and according to executive producer Marty Stratton there aremore updates planned forDoom Eternalin 2021beyondThe Ancient Gods Part 2.
Whatever these upcoming updates wind up bringing to the game, it should keep players engaged with the rebooted demon-slaying franchise. While fans like Dion42o show their appreciation with artwork and other projects, players have also engaged withDoom Eternalin unique ways like playing using a drum set.
Doom Eternalis available now for PC, PS4, Switch, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are planned sometime in 2021.
