Word on the street is that the sequel to theDetective Pikachuvideo game is close to wrapping up development.Pokemonfans may be surprised at this news, because although anewDetective Pikachugame for the Nintendo Switchwas announced three years ago, virtually nothing has been said about it since. One could be forgiven for thinking it was quietly canceled, but not so. Evidently it still exists, and it sounds like it may be coming soon.
Not to be confused with the 2019 live-action film adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds,Detective Pikachuwas released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016 in Japan before seeing a global launch two years later. The plot of the game is largely identical to the film’s, following a young man named Tim as he searches for his missing father with the help of a talking Pikachu, though the game features more mysteries to solve as players interact with the people and Pokemon that inhabit Ryme City.

Fans have been waiting patiently for any definitive news about the sequel, and it looks like they might finally have it. Users on Famiboards this week spotted a comment from the LinkedIn page of Jonathan Murphy, an employee atDetective Pikachudeveloper Creatures Inc., which mentions an unannounced project he worked on, as well as “one nearing release,Detective Pikachu 2.”
It’s a small status update ultimately, but it’s the biggest the game has received since its announcement in 2019. The radio silence is especially surprising given the fact that Nintendo hasn’t teased the game at all in any official capacity or mentioned it in any financial reports, and it has formore elusive titles likeMetroid Prime 4. Then again, Nintendo has become increasingly prone to unveiling games just a few months before they release, withMetroid Dread,Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, andMario Strikers: Battle Leaguebeing a few recent examples. Chances are it may be planning to do the same forDetective Pikachu 2.
That said, Nintendo fans also aren’t strangers to long waits and long periods of silence, as those who’ve been wanting to playThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,Metroid Prime 4,Bayonetta 3, andPikmin 4can attest. What makes the wait forDetective Pikachu 2details frustrating, though, is that, unlike the movie, the first game ended without concluding its story, leaving fans to wonder how Tim and Pikachu’s tale might end. With any luck, they won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
