Summary

TheDestiny 2player community is discussing some of the more unusual aspects of the game’s weapon design. Players also highlighted other flaws in the guns ofDestiny 2that might make them difficult or impossible to use as real-life firearms.

DestinyandDestiny 2are unusual outliers in the annals of military and sci-fi-themed shooter games, in part due to the game’s premise, which takes its narrative closer to the realm of fantasy stories. The endlessly revived Guardians of the Last City constantly battle againstsupernatural threats like the Hiveand the Taken, and enemies that use techniques so far removed from recognizable science that they’re closer to magic. By contrast, though Guardians also use magic-like powers and occasionally wield swords and glaives, their main weapons are almost always firearms, often with designs inspired by or evoking real-life guns seen in military inventories or movie prop houses.

One player has pointed out that those designs don’t always make a lot of sense in the real world. User patrick505883 on theDestiny 2subreddit highlighted a commonly seen design element inDestiny 2hand cannonsthat doesn’t seem practical from the standpoint of real-world firearm design.

Destiny 2 Hand Cannon Design Seems Physically Impossible

The element pointed out by patrick505883 has to do with the general structure of a common hand cannon visual template seen on weapons like theFatebringer from the Vault of Glassraid or even Exotic-tier weapons like Cayde-6’s Ace of Spades. Like most other hand cannons in the game, these weapons follow the rough structure of a traditional revolver pistol, such as a real-life Colt Python. However, some designs feature a barrel slung low and aligned with the bottom of the revolver’s cylinder. Patrick505883 pointed out that the hammer of theDestiny 2hand cannon is placed high enough to strike the top round in the cylinder, not the bottom one, making it non-functional in real life.

FellowDestinyplayers were amused by the observation, and brought up otherDestinyweapon designs that were nonsensical. Many posted a humorous image of the Conspirator scout rifle from the launch-eraDestiny 2Leviathan raid. The Conspirator’s stock had a design flaw that ensured that no bullet inside its magazine would physically be able to make it into the barrel, much less be able to fire at enemies. Others pointed out thatDestinyguns don’t necessarily use what would be recognizable firearm technology, even if they occasionally resemble an existing gun. Some more knowledgeable users also mentioned that there are some real-life revolvers that have a low barrel and a highly placed cocking lever that merely looks like a firing hammer, like the real-life Chiappa Rhino and Mateba Autorevolver, making such designs theoretically viable, if unlikely to function as they do in the game.
