On Friday, Sony made the shocking announcement that it would feature anew State of Play eventon Wednesday, October 27 at 2 PM PT/ 4 PM CT. Sony also confirmed the presentation would focus on third-party PS4 and PS5 games, meaning upcoming exclusives likeGod of WarandHorizon Forbidden Westwon’t be there. That’s important to note, as it allows fans to manage their expectations.
Of course, for some fans, that’s still straight out the window. The strongest points of speculation right now include a PS Plus reveal at the event, as well as featured games likeFinal Fantasy 16. State of Playfans believe the latter, among others, will be there thanks to recent updates to various websites, suggesting that timing isn’t just a coincidence. One other, more joking suggestion from fans comes in the form ofDeathloop.

As many know,Deathlooplaunched last month to strong reviews. Many even consider it a Game of the Year contender, but that doesn’t explain why it began trending on Twitter after the State of Play announcement. In short, many are joking about it being there—even if they don’t believe it actually will—because of how many Sony events it appeared at. Practically every prior State of Play and/or Sony event has featuredDeathloopto some degree, making it a running gag at the time, and it seems some fans aren’t willing to let that go.
Many are joking about it being at the State of Play, with other comments joking about “Deathloop 2 already?” While that may be a bit extreme, it’s worth mentioning that it’s not technically impossible forDeathloopto be there. It wouldn’t be a sequel obviously, but the game has proven to be quite popular, and many would likely be happy to hearDeathloopDLCwas in development. Of course, there may be a bit of haziness there given Arkane/Bethesda are owned by Microsoft, but that acquisition wasn’t intended to impact the release and probably won’t post-release.
Of course, the State of Play isn’t the only reason for the volume ofDeathlooptweets. Among these jokes and trendy statements, many are still commenting onDeathloopitself. If anything, that proves its staying power and popularity in the industry. It’s not single-player, but it plays a lot like one minus the Invasions. Most straightforward experiences like this disappear rather quickly, and it’s awesome thatDeathloopstill holds so strongly in discussions.
At the end of the day, only Sony and those third parties related to the State of Play event know what will be there. And while it may just be twenty minutes of third-partyPS4 and PS5 games, more news and information is always welcome. Fans are clearly excited about it,Deathlooppresent or not.
