Death of Rosehas gone through a rocky development cycle over the last few months. AfterDeath of Rosewas canceled in February, the game entered redevelopment in May with an entirely new setting and it now seems to be making progress. Artur Laczkowski, the director and producer forDeath of Rose, decided to give those eager for the horror title their first look at its gameplay.
This three-minute gameplay trailer was released after publisher Feardemic’s Gamescom conference. This is a sneak peak for the “first chapter” of what is set to be an episodic game according to theDeath of Rose’s official Steam page.

This new trailer demonstrates the type atmosphere Laczkowskiis looking to place players in. It has been no secret thatDeath of Roseis heavily inspired by theSilent Hillfranchise. InDeath of Rose’s original announcement, comparisons were already being made to Konami’s psychological-horror series.
The trailer above opens with an explanation of whatDeath of Roseis seeking to be. It’s considered “a new kind of horror experience that mixes nostalgic drama and complex puzzles with campy satire.” That final point likely stems from the games refocus on setting as explained in its re-reveal.Death of Roseturned from a simple story about two teenagers exploring a haunted building into a game inspired by the 1980s era of horror cinema. The trailer provides a general overview through narration of whatDeath of Roseis looking to accomplish when it releases later this year.
The gameplay reveal has been a big success according to Laczkowski who tweeted about the trailer’s views. The developer said he is “shocked” thatDeath of Rosewas one of the most watched games at Gamescom 2020. He continued his tweet to thank not only IGN but Feardemic, the publishing branch of Bloober Team, for the opportunity to show the game off.Death of Roseis not the only title Laczkowski is involved with, as the Bloober Team developer is also working onhorror gameThe Mediumfor PC and Xbox One.
If the nameDeath of Rosestrikes a sense of familiarity, that is likely because it is a play on a now infamous PlayStation 2 title. The name heavily borrows fromRule of Rose, a 2006 survival horror game that was banned in most countries after launch.Rule of Roseis an incredibly rare gameand easily considered one of the most coveted PlayStation 2 titles by collectors. Looking at theDeath of Rosegameplay trailer, it seeks to match the same sense of unease found inRule of Roseand its own inspiration ofSilent Hill.
Death of Roseis currently in development for PC and is set to release in 2020.
